Open Ended Lug Nuts with OEM ZLE wheels
Hello All,
I posted in wheels and tires but this might be a more appropriate place to get a response. Is anyone running open ended lugs with their OEM ZLE or SSLE wheels? I ordered some from Dorman but the seat seems smaller than the OEM lugs. I dont want to open myself up to a crummy situation on track. I found info on extended studs, but not much on lug nuts. If you have a set that you know works with part number, I would GREATLY appreciate it! Thanks! |

I don't know too much about lug seats, but when I ordered my BC Forged wheels from PK Auto Design, they asked me if I wanted the OE lug seat or aftermarket (I opted for aftermarket). They're definitely different and I was told they can't be interchanged. The aftermarket lug nuts that came with the BC Forged wheels are much slimmer than the OE lugs (as you observed with the Dormans you ordered).
Sorry that I don't have a solution to share, but just wanted to mention that it doesn't seem safe to run those smaller seat lugs on your OE wheels. I've searched around and there doesn't seem to be a resource with information about lug seat sizing -- I see a lot about different lug seats (cone, ball, mag, etc.), but no mention of what Chevy uses for their 14x1.5 lug nuts.

Get the 19mm open lugs from Apex Race Parts. That's what I have on my ZLE.
Extremely cheap.

Not a joke. I run the Ford Racing lugs. They aren't chromed, very durable, slightly smaller hex size, and are cheap.

Depending on how frugal you want to be you can remove the chrome caps from the OE lug nuts and turn them into open-ended ones, too.

I purchased the apex lugs, they should be here this week. They were much more cost effective. Only came in chrome, but I will probably pc them black. |

I saw recommendation to use Ford Racing open lugnuts.
Gorilla has bunch of options as well, both in spline and conventional 6-point socket style.

All these lug nuts - including stock - have 60-degree conical seats. The ones that use a 3/4" (19mm) socket size are made to fit in the narrow wells of some aftermarket wheels. They can't have quite as much diameter and surface area on their seats because of that. I've been running Gorilla 45048BC like this with various wheels including stock with zero issues. My MRR wheels require that smaller diameter, and there's no reason to think that stock wheels wouldn't be safe with the same lug nuts. OTOH, if you are only running stock wheels, you don't need the smaller diameter lug nuts for clearance in the lug nut wells, so you might as well run the larger-diameter (21mm wrench size) lug nuts.

That 12.49 each price is for the black ones, but in a grey/silver color they are priced at 8.99 each. They are indeed pretty light in weight, example, 5 of the Katechs in the pic weighed 4 oz, while 5 of the stock Chevy lug nuts were 12.6 oz on the same scale. Yes that comes out to 2 lbs less than stock for the complete set. Note that a 12-point 19mm socket is needed to install them. Pic of the grey/silver ones in a black MRR wheel below:

Ti are neat and I've been tempted, but you really have to use some anti seize and then adjust torque to compensate. I'd rather not deal with the anti seize.
