Unhappy Destroyed rear axle?

My 2016 SS has been good to me overall since the day it was built.

Yeah I like to drive it hard from time to time, but nothing abusive. Hell, it's a racecar, it's meant to get up and go.

The story: So I had to bring it to my tire place to have a slow leak plugged in the rear tire. Drove there as I usually do.

When it came time to leave, I pulled out, gave it some good throttle, then as soon as I shifted down to second and floored it, I lost all power to the whole rear end and rolled, helplessly, off to the side of the road. Only other symptom was the "Service Suspension" light appearing on the dash.

Had it towed to the dealer down the road and when I called to see what was going on, I was told they had to order a new rear axle. Could not get more information because the technician is off until next week.

This car has zero mods done to it besides the usual oil catch can that most people put in. So it's not putting out any sort of extra power that could possibly overstress the rear axle. Plus, I thought the driveshaft is usually the first thing to go when it comes to transferring power to the rear wheels, not the axle.

I still have my powertrain warranty until April so anything defective should be covered I hope.

Just a crazy coincidence that nothing this severe has ever happened until the day I had to get a tired changed/plugged.

I learned something new today that a stock SS is a racecar! Seriously though it could have been the axle bolts failed and you broke an axle in the rearend. Thankfully you do have some drivetrain warranty left or it would be a very expensive replacement. Good luck!

I kinda laughed at that too.

I don’t even consider our ZL1’s that.

Probably the axleshaft bolts. If the ring/pinion went axle usually locks.

I do because they work and I don't trust the tire repair shop to not damage my wheels. I have had a plug in my OEM RunFlats since it was 2 months old 4 years ago. Getting new Michelin Sport 4 S tires in a few days because the RF's are at the wear bars.

I’m not saying “people” as in, ya know, people, but the people. Ya know, the people, people.
