Vibration in steering wheel - could it be wheel bearings??

2018 Camaro 2SS - 34k miles

I bought the car last year in Florida, drove it back to Michigan and put new Nitto NT555 G2 tires on the stock rims the next day. After driving for a day or two I felt a vibration at highway speeds (70+mph), I took it back to discount tire and they said my one wheel was slightly bent. I had them remount and road force balance and I left. I drove it like that for about a month and then picked up some Z28 replica wheels that were a week old. Had the same tires mounted and still have a vibration. I had them rebalance and still the same. Now do you think it's something wrong with the suspension? Wheel bearings maybe? Or Defective tires? Want to get this resolved. One of these days my buddy is going to swap wheels/tires from his 1LE to see if that rules out the tires/wheels but wanted to see if any of y'all have had an issue.

I don't think you have a wheel bearing issue, due to year of your car and miles stated. 99 times out of a 100 it is your tires or wheels that is the problem. I would have all your wheels checked for trueness and use use better quality tires. Also, have you thought about a drive shaft issue such as u joints or a carrier bearing perhaps.

Maybe one of your wheels threw a balance weight .

I thought Nittos are a quality tire? I doubt they threw a weight since I had them rebalanced twice. I will get the wheels checked. Didn't think it was a drive shaft or carrier bearing since it's in the steering wheel

Every tire manufacturer can have issues. I once has a similar issue with a new F1 Supercar tire on my C5 Z06, ended up being a steel belt in the tire was just slightly misaligned. Got a replacement tire and it was gone.

Yea I understand all tire manufacturers can have some bad tires go out, how does discount tire determine if the tire has a bad belt or is defective?

I read it like this, you drove the car from Florida to Michigan without the issue. You put new tires on it, and now there is the issue.

I personally would highly doubt that something like a wheel bearing, or shaft balance, or any of those hard parts would make that trip without issue, then suddenly give out. Possible, maybe, likely not really. Unless there were an event, pot hole, curb, something like that.

New tires, like new anything else can be defective. The steel belts out of whack, flat spotted, stuff like that. It may not show up on the balancer, but put the weight of the car on it, and there it is.

How do you find out which tire it is? I do not know, perhaps Discount Tire has a way to check for that. If they sold you the tire, and it is defective, Nitto covers them, so no skin off their back to replace it.

Have heard about this problem and also experienced it many times. It's usually almost always wheel balance. It could be that the tires/wheels were not balanced properly from the start (most likely) or the wheel is bent, or tire out of round. Usually more weights can take care of the bent or out of round issue although a good shop would let you know.

I would check tire balance- not all shops can balance tires good, or it might have been a new guy not properly trained.

Maybe a dumb question, but isn't the steering on the Camaro electronic? Meaning there isn't a steering column per say. So how would any kind of wheel/suspension issue transfer through the steering wheel? Wouldn't you get those type of things through the seat or somehow?

Just asking...

Camaros have electric steering assist. They still have a traditional column and rack and everything, it's just an electric motor providing the assist instead of a hydraulic pump.

@ OP, did the vibration go away after the road force balance on the OE wheels? Did you get the road force and balance both done when swapping to the Z28 reps? If you could balance the vibration out then it came back then I'd just suspect a bad balance job when the tires got mounted on your new wheels. If not, it could be an issue with the tire itself as others have said.
