Brake fluid

So, exactly what is the deal with the brake fluid needing changing out for tracking? Can I not/ should I not, track my ZL1 for even a few hours without changing it ? Seems crazy to me that the factory brake fluid is not adequate for some high spirited driving for a few hours here and there. And then I need to change it back ? Makes no sense, please enlighten me.

Castrol SRF Will avoid having your brake fluid boil and your brake pedal go to the floor when you want to stop. You will Only reach this point on a track when you are really cooking and heating up the OEM brake fluid

Not usually as dramatic as depicted in the video. Usually your brake pedal has more and more travel until, in extreme cases, the pedal goes all the way to the floor without any braking
With Castrol SRF, and depending on your usage, you can leave in for a year usually, but to each their own and check for yourself
There are other substitutes such as motul but you will need to change more often. Super blue or something like that is supposed to be very good as well.

A lot of people on this site including myself are using Motul 600 Dot 4. It runs about $16 on Amazon and is more than adequate for the average Joe running on the street with an occasional track day. See the below thread for more info:

The damage not covered by the 10% track day insurance deductible on that yellow vette and the gate it destroyed was probalbly more than the $70 SRF....

You have to swap out the other fluids much more frequently than Castrol srf and nothing really beats the resistance to Boiling of Castrol srf. Motul in particular must be swapped out regularly

Thank you all for the informative input, I will heed to the advice. The hassle factor it’s self will easily pay the difference of the best fluid available.

GM uses a lower boiling point fluid (DOT 3) as the factory fill because it has greater longevity and it is less hygroscopic than DOT 4. DOT 4 is more track appropriate for obvious reasons. The factory fill is appropriate for all street use and most owners will never go on track. It is easy to bleed/swap so no worries.

A liter should more than suffice when doing a brake flush right? I had no issues at Roebling Roads with stock everything when I had about 7k miles on the car. I'm at 22k now and figure if I'm paying the dealer next week for a brake flush, I may bring something "better" than the Valvoline stuff they use.

I was about to order the Motul Dot 5.1, but found the RBF600 at our local Cycle Gear for $21.99 per .5 liter. Never thought to check a motorcycle shop and I have one!
