Correct me if I am wrong, but the newer ones now have a nylon core, which is actually stronger than steel. Of course, it looks cheaper because it's not metal, but it should be pretty sturdy stuff if I can run a few track days on the oil filter without the engine imploding.

Not sure about the type of the core, you may well be right there, but the top plate is much thinner and the filter itself is shorter, meaning less filtration area overall. Anyway, I do use this newer part and it works well on my non-stock car, too (oil is changed frequently), I just preferred the old, sturdier one.

I did cut an amsoil filter open today so I could send the filter element off for testing. (This is not for a Camaro)

Not sure about all of them BUT the EA0-17 model had the check valve at the bottom of it.

The Mobil 1 and Napa Gold both have an oil drain back valve in them. I checked the Mobil 1 I have to see if there was one.
