Tilton Engineering Severe Duty Starter

Does anyone have experience with this starter? While my car has never failed to start, the starter really drags when hot, so much so that I'm afraid to shut it off when staging at the track or drag strip. I plan on adding an additional ground strap, but if this starter has appreciably better hot performance than the stocker, I may take the belt and suspenders approach and add it along with the ground cable.
I'm also wondering if it will interfere with the headers; A guy with a C7 Vette reported problems with header clearance on the Summit website

I don't have experience with the Tilton offering but I do have the Powermaster 9509 from
https://gwatneyperformance.com/produ...starters-9509/

I have it installed on my build with kooks 1" 7/8 headers installed and it fits. I even have a heat blanket around it from DEI. I also added a ground from my negative post by the fuse block to to engine block. I have had zero issues starting my car since. Hope this helps.

Did it just bolt right up if so I may pick one up for my car. Just hope it would fit with 2in headers.

Jim, I bolted on that additional 0 gauge ground strap (between the negative chassis terminal next to the fuse box and the top water pump housing bolt), and it eliminated all hot start slowness I had seen in the summer. My car always started, but the hotter the engine, the more it "suffered and sweated"; now it's always the same <1s start, regardless of temperatures.

Just FYI, I think it's worth a try before you spend even more on auxiliary parts you might not even need. If this doesn't help (enough), you can trivially add it with the engine back in the car.

EDIT: what I actually meant to say is if you decide to still get the new starter and that doesn't help enough, sheesh. But I'd just add this cable and not mess with the starter, unless the stock one is half dead already.

What locations did you use to tie it together?

Said it in brackets : from the large negative chassis terminal next to the fuse box to the top water pump housing bolt. Works like a charm.

I suppose it would be silly not to try the additional cable first. Since my car never failed to start, even though it did struggle on occasion. Worse case I'll just have to unfortunately the passenger side header to swap out the starter

You may have seen this thread but just in case I have copied it for you:

https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=586153

it has a lot of detail about adding another ground cable. There are multiple possibilities for the engine side connection sprinkled throughout the thread. Any of them should work for you. The added cable absolutely eliminated all my hot start slow crank situations. I would certainly recommend you try it before tackling a starter replacement. Good luck!

I would take the advise from the above and start with the ground cables. That may fix your problem which is a lot cheaper then buying a new starter.

I did both in parallel but to each their own. The starter I mentioned before does bolt right in but there are some measurements you need to take for the pinion gear aligning with the fly wheel. It comes with shims to adjust the starter both horizontally and vertically.

You also need to cut the connector on the solenoid plug to install a ring connector to fit under the new terminal stud. I will see if I have any pictures but i doubt it. I did not have to loosen the headers at all to make it fit though.

Overall I'm very happy with it, just takes a few hours and patience to get it in with the measurements and adjustments.
