ZL1 tips on an SS

So doing a super cheap thing. Picked up a ZL1 factory exhaust for free. Pretty much the same npp system I have now. But the tips are noticeably bigger. So I’m going to swap it onto my car. One day I’ll probably go AWE but not yet. So I’m taking a moment to try this for a little more flare on the back. Also painting the suitcase black so it will be less visible. And I’m going to polish the tips but this is where its at so far. Monday its going over to a local exhaust shop to have it put on. May only do the muffler but not sure yet. Might have the secondaries taken out as well since we’re already going to be there.

Looks good. i did the same (minus paint) on an 18 SS i had previously, and it made a big difference. i got it from another member local to me for about $60.

I plan to do the same with my 22 SS 1LE, since the muffler shop i used for that one time, gets camaros regularly and also had ZL1 and SS exhausts laying around. i will surely let him keep my SS exhaust and take a used ZL1 exhaust, hehe.

Well here’s the finished product. Very subtle. Although I do have one complaint. The car is noticeably quieter now. Not by a lot but its a little. Also the tone is deeper. I had them take the crush pipes out as well. Just because. Maybe thats the deeper tone? Either way. Now its going to get the secondaries cut off because I need my sound back lol.

As far as the tips go I love them. Looks much better in person. The picture makes it seem so minimal but its more noticeable to me. So in my opinion worth it. And all for like 100ish bucks.

i also have no idea why photos keep loading upside down. Double checked on my phone and they are all the correct way.

Sorry not to derail from your thread, but why did they go through all this trouble of making slightly wider tips on the ZL1? Supposedly everything else is the exact same except for the diameter of the ends of the tips right?

as far as I can tell everything was the exact same except the exhaust tips. They just cut out my muffler and welded up the new one. All hangers lined up and pipes matched up. The SS NPP is basically the same system you get on a ZL1(as far as I can tell)

Looks like the part of the suitcase you see is not painted? Or is it painted and is more noticable when stock?

Only for looks, methinks.

I did a similar thing with my v6, I wanted the looks of quad tips originally and got a steal for a ZL1 exhaust so lucky to have the bigger tips. I just made the factory ZL1 exhaust essentially an axle-back and had it welded on. Since mine is a v6 and the piping was different I had to have adapters but my noise actually went up in a good way. Gave a deeper tone to the exhaust from stock IMO.

In the picture with the painted portion of the suitcase upright the exhaust system is upside down. Made it easier to paint. Installed on the car the black is down. I did not paint the top half of the suitcase as you really can’t see it unless you crawl underneath the car and I didn’t care that much to go all the way with it. This was more of a fun little cosmetic project than anything else. Although I have confirmation from my wife and my father that the car is noticeably quieter. Although the overall tone of the exhaust has gotten deeper. 🤷🏼*♂️

Here is the finished product as it sits now. I realized I didn’t get a very good shot of the painted suitcase underneath . A little polish on the tips back to new like shine and she’s all done.

I know it sounds weird, but you may wanna get some flat black paint and spray the insides of each tip. The NPP does not use each pipe equally and eventually leaves one shiny and one dirty on each side. It makes the less used one look fake.
