How to QUCIK FILL with 5 gallon jugs at the racetrack

Ok guys. I usually take with me 15 gallons of E85 in THREE fuel jugs with me to the track since most tracks DO NOT have E85. As most of you know it normally is a real pain in the ass to put the fuel in the car even with fuel funnels.

To solve that issue, I made a 1/2 inch diameter PVC fuel pipe extension that I directly attach to my fuel jug's MALE threaded end using a 3/4 inch female to female connector so that I can insert about 12 inches of the PVC pipe DIRECTLY into the filler neck. I can then empty the fuel jug fairly quickly without spilling any fuel. PICS are below are what I used. The KEY piece that makes this work without leaking is the SHARKBITE piece. It LOCKS in the PVC pipe into the fitting securely.

The reason I DID NOT use all PVC material is I could find the correct sizes needed. Using this you can vent the jug and fill it at fill flow without stopping.

My initial thought was - why do you need to refill quickly as if you’re in a race.

Then I remembered how long it takes to empty 5 gallons into any car. Even if you have time, it sucks to hold the can that long while trying to not spill anything.

What’s also cool is that it seems you could insert the pvc pipe fully before even tilting the can making spills almost impossible.

Nice work! Saving for future implementation.

Yeah Thanks. Before, I was using a funnel and I would have to keep lifting the jug up and down to control the flow so that it wouldnt run out of the funnel onto the ground PLUS I could NEVER vent the jug because the fuel would flow too fast. SO basically the fuel would slosh back and forth as it came out of the jug. Now I can hold it up continuously after I vent the jug. Much cleaner faster fill.

Your comment regarding having the jug on the ground with the fill extension being in place is EXACTLY how I wanted it. see pic below.\\

use the GM little black funnel thingy which comes with the car...seems ridiculous but it works best for me. Your trick is nice too as it will release all of the flaps which typical funnels do not.

That’s golden! About how long does it take to dump all 5 gallons? Considering doing the same for our lemons race car.

UPDATE:

It takes about 90 seconds to empty the 5 gallon jug into the car. The PVC extension tube of 1/2 an inch diameter prevents it from flowing faster. HOWEVER thats ALOT faster than using a funnel and sloshing the fuel back and forth thru it into the tank.

Since the largest diameter PVC that you can use on the extension is 1/2 inch, the filler neck in our cars is the restriction really. The filler tube that comes directly off the Jug is 3/4 an inch.

I guess GM did that as an anti Theft device regarding fuel (baffled reduced diameter filler neck). If you ever tried to siphon fuel out of you car for any reason it is next to impossible. I am sure also GM also did that due to wanting to keep fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere from your fuel tank due to an EPA restriction.

one of my old 5 gal jugs started leaking, so I ordered a new one from amazon. the new one came with a grey plastic extension, very similar to yours but shorter, and it was sized to fit in our capless tank openings.

Well thats good to know. I wonder whether or not that extension is long enough to allow you to do a fill without stopping??? When you get that jug if you could post here about that it would be very helpful.

Yeah isnt that a bitch about those jugs leaking at times??? Sometimes no matter how tight you screw on the lid it leaks for no damn reason at all. I myself have one like that now that I NEVER use for that reason.

THANKS!!!

If I already didnt have about ten of the old style jugs myself I would buy the new one and try it myself!!

At the bottom of the jug link is a link to an extension bender that looks like a 30 degree bend to keep the extension from kinking. Good stuff, but I guess I got a little too excited too soon...."can not ship to CA!

I have the VP racing 5gal jugs with this long plastic pipe nipple on them and have never had an issue getting fuel in. It empties the can in about 2 min or so.

Welp, I assembled something almost identical… instead of 1/2” pex, I used 3/4” pex tubing. Snug fit but not tight. The clear tubing on my jug wasn’t long enough so I had to use a longer piece of pex tubing.

I’m glad to report there wasn’t any spillage and 5 gallons only took 65-70 seconds. For reference, the pump at the gas station dispensed 5 gallons in 52 seconds. Close pace!

We’re going to use this rig for our Lemons race in 2 weeks! Thanks OP
