Warning from GM

Goodyear_ZL1_tire_bulletin.pdf

A friend of mine shared this with me. I hope everyone in colder climates take heed.

Old news (that is dated 2011). Those are the G2's anyway, new ones are called G3's. Most tires like this are not recommended for cold use.

Thanks for the heads up. No matter the brand or car, it's never a good idea to run a summer tire (<300TW) in cold (below 50F) temps.

Sorry, but this a crock. So what about all those cars sitting in the lot? for months at a time?

That is old news, but I believe the exact same warning for the Supercar 3's are in the performance supplement.

ALL Summer tires are subject to poor handling in weather below 40* but they really start getting bad below 60* especially when you add rain.

Yup, but that's why I said "Most tires like this are not recommended for cold use."

The "extreme performance" class of tire does not tolerate cold temperatures. If you look at a "max performance" or "Ultra High Performance" summer tire recommendations, they relate to not using them in cold temperatures because the compound becomes less effective. "Extreme Performance" tires typically cannot even be stored/used in cold temperatures without damaging them. The goodyears actually are more tolerant than most.

As for the dealerships, I think you bring up a good point, are they caring for these tires properly? Look at how most dealerships treat lead acid batteries. Cars sit on lots for months in cold temperatures and may be moved a couple of times without letting the battery charge. Draining a lead acid battery and letting it sit dead damages it. Do they seem to care if their customers experience shortened battery life?
