Solution for Tire Slipping on Wheel

After a single session, my 3Rs rotated ~90 degrees on the stock OE wheel. This makes for some really sweet vibrations on the straight >140.

Anyone found a solution?

A mechanic friend suggested xtra-Seal Bead Sealer. Anyone tried this or a similar bead sealant?

I've had tires slip after being freshly mounted, usually because they use too much lube. A month later it seems like the lube dries up and they hold fine. I don't think I'd try to put any sealant or other material on the bead. You want it dry.

Swap the tires from one side to the other. I've done this and the tires will start to rotate back the other way. Plus you'll help keep the tire wear more even. While not a proactive solution, it may lessen the effects. I've done this in the past and it works but there is no guarantee they'll move again or even enough. I've found the tire that moves the most is usually the least loaded tire. For example, at my track, Pitt Race, it is a right corner dominant track with the heaviest braking occurring mostly at right turns. My RR tire was the one that moved the most.

My tire guys were very responsive to trying minimal lube or even something else like Windex. But this can make setting the bead difficult. I think the minimal lube helped but I really did not find the previous movements create any vibrations. I think tire choice matters as some manufacturers have a better hold on quality control than others. More often than not, my wheel weights usually ended up in the same areas on the wheel. That points to the wheel being the dominant factor on imbalance. I see you are using 3Rs and I have used them also and had movement, so my thoughts on the tire choice may not be accurate.

Once I got my freshly mounted tires back, I would wash them and remove as much of the excess lube from near the bead. I also let them sit out in the direct sun to help dry out the lube.

Your friend's suggestion wouldn't hurt. If that's the same black stuff they use on old, corroded aluminum wheels to help the seal, that might help.

I'll add that I have knurled bead seats on all my track wheels, but I've still had freshly mounted tires slip. The knurled bead seats probably help, but I think excess/fresh lube is the most likely culprit.

My understanding is the OE ZL1 1LE 19's have a knurled bead.

The tires were mounted 2 months prior to being used, so the lube wasn't fresh. But there was a lot of it. I can talk to my installer about using less.

I have had the same result, however, with 3 different tire installers. Maybe they're all using too much lube. Who knows.

Appreciate the responses.

I don't think the ZLE wheels are knurled. The Gen5 Z/28 wheels were.

This is enlightening for me as I had never heard of this outside of drag racing.

This also happens on my knurled bead wheels. Using less tire lube and letting it dry up some helped a bit, but not fully. Just ignore it and send it

It can be kinda uncomfortable to send it to and beyond 130-140 mph when wheel weights move around relative to the tire and you get nasty vibrations.

I used knurled BC Forged wheels with 3R tires and all 4 tires rotate on the wheel. I use a minimal amount of the GM recommended Hunter brand tire lube and found it makes little difference.

The best solution I've found is just to minimize the use of weights. If you aline the white dots on the tire opposite the valve stem, the weight required to balance a 3R should be minimal. My car is dedicated for track use, so unless it needs more than 2 ozs, I don't even bother with weights. I've never noticed any vibration with this approach.

Agree with this too. A lot of folks that run slicks/scrubs will balance a wheel without tire and just run it, or not balance anything at all. All the fun of something this fast and heavy

the factory 19" ZLE wheel is not knurled but the '14-'15 19" Z/28 wheel is knurled. My last two new 3Rs took .75 oz and 1.25 oz to balance so no big deal if you don't balance them. I balance mine myself so this is real data. Make sure you cover the adhesive wheel weights with the foil like racers tape and your weights will never fly off.
