6 Speed Shifter Issues

Hey Gang, I just traded a 15 1SS auto for an 18 2SS with a 6 speed. I'm an old 4 speed guy. Maybe I'm just out of practice but often when I shift from 1st to 2nd it goes to 4th. To prevent this from happening I try holding the shifter to the left during the shift. When I do that, it seems to hit a stop and I have to go back to neutral to pull it into 2nd. Is it just me or is that a common problem on a manual transmission?

It's driving me nuts because I want to take it to the dragstrip.
I'm not going to embarrass myself if I can't even shift it going to the friggin gas station.

Thanks Paul

It won't skip shift if you're giving it enough throttle and/or spinning the motor high enough. Shouldn't be an issue at the strip.

That, or order a skip-shift delete kit. Cheap and easy.

to the forums, PBnL, and congratulations on your upgrade
As stated above, this is a "feature" GM added for fuel economy, if you shift above 2500-ish rpm or give it more throttle, the "force 1st-to-4th shift" solenoid won't engage.

If I had the 6-speed Tremec, I'd get a skip shift delete harness on day 1 myself, that's for sure.

Btw, this "feature" has been around forever now. My old 2000 Z/28 had it lol.

Just shift from first to second above 19 mph and you’ll not hit the skip shift lock out.

As others said, it's a feature added to please EPA. It's not very hard to defeat with the right harness.

Or just give it more gas as you take off.

I personally never bothered adding the skip shift delete, but I see why some would consider it.

Also, read the Owner's Manual.

Skip-shift solenoid. Prevents 2nd gear engagement under pre defined perimeters. Enabled Camaro SS to achieve the magic 25 mpg epa number which kicks the gas guzzler tax out by going 1-4. Can be disabled very easily with “eliminator” plug in. I used to go 1-3 before I installed mine.

I agree. I would not even call this "aggressive" driving. You have to really be in a putt-putt mindset to hit the skip shift.
I daily drive this car, and the only time I get the skip shift is when someone at an intersection does something stupid and i have to slow down. maybe once every two months. I love gadgets and would have no problem installing the eliminator, but does not strike me as worth the effort.
I trained myself to go 1-3 when it comes up. Again, not a big deal.

Full disclosure: I did add the skip-shift solenoid to my car, as I've had one in every Chevy M6 I've owned for 19 years now.

That being said, the one in this Camaro was pretty unintrusive, and I found my normal driving prevented it from going off. On the occasion I was being pretty gentle, it'd hit and be annoying.
