My cap says 5W30 on my 2017 ZL1. I would use the oil grades your owners manual states. Simple and easy and done!

Did you all do a 500 mile/1,500 mile oil changes during break in phase? What intervals? Just street driving, no track yet. Thanks

Use the factory recommended oil and filter. You gain nothing by doing otherwise.

This is an old thread but, is anyone using a ZL1 1LE for autocross? What oil weight are you using? I've had issues in the past with too thin and too thick of oil while autocrossing.

GM mandates SAE 15W50 for the ZLE for all track duty, due to G3R tires being sticky (to eliminate any pick up issues).

Assuming the motor is properly warmed up before any runs i dont think you could go wrong with it.

Having said that, many here track their cars (non ZLE models) on sticky tires incl slicks and by and large (i believe), run 0 or 15W40. So, this is a bit inconclusive, as GM doesn't state that other Camaros must run thicker oil on stickier rubber...

Bottom line, if warranty is a consideration, then I would run what the manual specifies. Cheers!

What does your manual say? I cant recall, but earlier cars might have been factory filled with 5w30 for street, as GM dealers didn't carry 0W40. After GM did a deal with Mobil, 0W40 Dexos2 Mobil1 became the factory fill and in effect the standard. But 0W40 (and 5W40) were always track standards, except for ZLE, which was the thicker oil, due to stickier tires. Pretty sure my first 1LE came factory filled with 5W30. The second with 0W40.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

Exactly my point! Proper 5w30 is totally adequate and all older versions had it as street spec. Including my 17.
But, GM switched factory fill to 0w40 and hence all newer cars now say 0w40. Because GM dealers carry it now

After the first 500 miles, I switched to Motul 5W40 and I'm going to use it for track and street duty.
If I would drive the car in freezing environments, I would go with 0W40.
