Since then it's been nothing but Mobil 1. I know in 2019 they started recommending 0-40 ESP, but for you guys with 17s and 18s, is your manual saying anything different than mine? Oil cap just Dexos or Mobil 1?
I typically buy two 5 qt jugs from wallyworld and a PF64 off Amazon all for about $50 and my dealer would change it for $10-20 depending on kind of special they were running.
Zed, my 2017 ZL1 has Dexos on the cap and 5W30. On the top panel of the radiator support there is a sticker that has AC Delco/ Mobil 1 printed on it. I use Valvoline synthetic 5W30 in mine.

The 5/30W Dexos I oil is fine for daily use. The '19 and up shipped with the 0/40W ESP Dexos II oil because it is street and track certified. One less fluid change to deal with on track days. However, all years are fine with the 5/30W Dexos I oil for daily driving.

No matter what brand you put in, I would recommend a Dexos I or Dexos II certification in case of a warranty claim.

Take a look at your invoice. What type of oil does it say was used?

If it just says Dexos, then the dealer just filled it with the usual bulk Dexos oil they use on regular cars and not a full synthetic like Mobil 1 which is a lot less expensive although it does meet manufacturer spec for your car.

Also, quite often dealers will have a 'special' discounted price on their 'oil change with 27 point inspection' service.

Your statement here is not necessarily accurate. A significant percentage of dexos1 oil is available as 100% synthetic and not a "blend". I personally use the 5W-30 Kirkland oil from Costco as it's $25 for 10 quarts (Comes in a box of 2 5 quart jugs).

I did my own with the miracle 0w-40 esp cost 105 with the filter. I now use 5-30 per the manual as I am not tracking my car, it's 25 now.

Of course you are correct in stating that not all Dexos is a blend, and I did not mean to imply that.

I was just pointing out that most dealers buy their Dexos in bulk as a generic 'Dexos' that is used in most oil changes unless the customer specifically asks for something else.

For example, when I get a oil change on my 2013 ZL1, I specify I want Mobil 1, and the oil change runs right around $89.95.

Whereas, an oil change on my 2015 Malibu 2,0T with the dealer recommended Dexos (Not Mobil 1) is only around $40 or so.

And no, I have no idea if the dealer recommended/supplied Dexos is a blend or not, but I suspect it's probably not considering the lower cost, but it does meet the neccessary Dexos requirements for the car.

809-88865635 x 10 was used according to the sheet, that's Acdelco 5w30 full sun.

Looked up the pn on rockauto and it's $3.50 a quart.

Well sob

What actually matters is that it's 5W-30 dexos1 oil. Your warranty remains fully in tact with any 5W-30 dexos1 oil.

The 5W-30 Mobil1 can be bought in 5 gal jugs and is about ~$45 for 10qt. The 0W-40 ESP Mobil1 (which I've switched over to) is only available in 1qt bottles and overall for 10qt is about twice the price of the 5W-30.

The key benefit of running with the newer stuff, other than cold start lubrication improvements, is that it doesn't need to be switched out when going to the track, per the owner's manual.
Hold up a sec, GM is requiring 0w-40 ESP on all LT1 models 2019+ even for the street? That doesn't make sense.

I buy the oil and filter (Mobil 1 for both) and the dealership charges me about $27 to change the oil and filter.

It's the only way I can be reasonably sure they use the products I want. Then check dipstick and under car when I get home to make sure it was done right.

There's a whole thread on this.

In a nutshell... 0W-40 dexos2 has always been required for track use. In 2019, GM "swapped" their recommendations from "5W-30 with 0W-40 for track use" to "0W-40 with 5W-30 being ok for street use only." GM may have decided that the 0W-40 dexos2 offers better protection all around, but it's more likely that people were tracking their cars and not paying attention to the need to change out the oil. In other words, the change more likely came from legal than engineering.

Nothing has changed in the motors, and using 5W-30 desos1 on the street is still acceptable to GM and will not void your warranty.
