Lease a Chevy Bolt or Volt. The gas savings will pay for the lease and drive your Camaro like you stole it.

If you can't afford it, get another ride.
Ya... We're currently riding at about 4.50-4.70 a gallon for the good stuff up here in winterland
When gas was high a few years back were paying well over $6/gallon up here

One thing I would like to point out in this discussion, is that the Gen6 Camaro gets pretty damn good gas mileage in it's various forms. My SS is getting close to 30MPG door to door going down to my dad's house (75% freeway, pretty flat terrain, and the other 25% is country 2 lane roads).

So gas price increases do hurt a bit and I am not minimizing anyone's pain if they are on a limited budget, but I am totally amazed at how efficient these new Camaros are. I never would have dreamed that I could have a car that performs like it does (0-60 in 4.0, 12.3 1/4 mile, etc.) and still manage to get close to 30MPG on the freeway.

These are awesome times we live in (as far as performance cars go).

Irrelevant to us, i.e. U.S. OPEC and Persian Gulf countries account for 47% of petroleum imports to the U.S. What happens to them once we produce more is not our first priority.

I tried that for a year. The Volt is a marvel, but way overpriced (even leased) to be cost-effective.

Naturally, I had to drag race the Volt.

Totally awesome, drag racing a Volt!!!

So, how much would gas prices have to increase for it to become more cost effective. Or, how would having solar panels on the roof, and charging for free help out the math?

I'm sure the young'uns are laughing at that video of the drag racing Volt, but if you go back to the dark days of the mid-70's to early 1980's, there were V8 Camaros that didn't run that fast. True. Look it up. A 1980 Z/28 with a 4-speed ran 16.4 sec. @ 86 mph. That was the *fast* Camaro!

10-year cost to own a Volt ($40,000) vs. a $30,000 car that gets 32mpg is about the same, with a commute between 30-100 miles/day.

If gas goes to $6/gallon, you might save $8000 over 10 years for a 30 mile daily commute, $12000 for a 100 mile daily.

If you use a complete solar setup that actually works, you might save $5000 over 10 years, minus your start-up costs for the solar (probably well over $5k).

Here's a neat Volt Calculator:
http://www.digifixpix.com/volt/volt_calc.asp

The Volt was fun and a great car to drive, especially since it had gas generator so you had no range anxiety. I would go a month or more without a fill up. But I was also paying on a $40k car, not a beater.

It's a great niche vehicle, with little economic value.

I just paid 32K for a 2017 Volt LT. With 7500 Federal + 4400 State tax credits, it's a $20k car that I rarely have to put gas in.

I'm very happy with it so far.

Mine was $40k-ish in early 2013, got the $7500 and no State, IIRC.

Great deal for you, sucks for the rest of us taxpayers to subsidize it.

Great business to be in, like solar in recent times - get millions/billions of guaranteed loans and subsidies for a product not as cost efficient as petroleum, go bankrupt, walk away rich. Where do I sign up?

Same place corn farmers / ethanol producers sign up for their subsidies on making their corn into ethanol. Something tax payers have been paying for for the past 30 years to the tune of way more (definitely) billions than solar / electric has been given the past decade they've been available to purchase.

Or you could get into the oil business which gets around 17 billion subsidized per year.

Subsidies are everywhere it's part of the job governments have. It's good to at least see it in an industry that needs it to start so that it can replace what we currently are running out of. Waiting until it's needed is too late.
