The car starts remotely but to drive away you have to have the key fob with you and press start when you get in the car. The fob does not have to be in the car to start remotely, just needed to drive away.

No, the car starts remotely but then for you to drive off, the keyfob has to be in the car. Once you step on the brake without the keyfob inside, the car shuts off. Of course, this is all moot in my situation as I have a manual.

They do charge $10/month for the subscription or something along those lines! Could be wrong but worth it to look it up! Also factory warranty 3/36k stays regardless of who you bought the car from, even if its private party. I believe its only Genesis that gives out a crazy bumper to bumper warranty of 10years/100k miles and its only applicable to the FIRST owner. Rest all manufacturers, I believe the warranty transfers by itself to the next owner.
The app only works for the original owner for "free" - one would have to pay the subscription if not the original owner (and not CPO) or beyond the paltry 30 days or whatever they offer it for free now.

The dealer isn't exactly incorrect, just didn't provide complete explanation. You can use the OnStar app to start the engine similar to a remote start with the key fob. This doesn't mean the vehicle is in a state where it's ready to put into gear and drive away. You still need to have a fob in the cabin, and press the button to put the vehicle into gear and drive away. Just like you would with a fob-based remote start.

The point is on hot, humid summer or blustery winter days I can use OnStar to remote start from my desk at work which is a 12-15 minute walk from the vehicle so that the interior temperature is conditioned. I would generally need to be within eyesight to use the fob for this, and maybe get 40-50 seconds of engine run time before I enter the vehicle. Which isn't enough time to make a dent in the interior temperature.

Depending on how one wants to define terms, in a modern car, just because the engine is running, doesn't mean the vehicle is "on".

Very true. Starting and running the engine doesn't require the fob so long as it's an automatic (remote start isn't an option on manuals). But, you're not driving the car without the fob.

Very interesting! Thank you for the detailed response, I owned a manual so had no idea about how this works...
