Oil Change on a 2022 2SS

Hello,

It is time to do my first oil change on a 2022 2SS that I bought used a few months ago. I took it the my local Chevy dealer and I was quoted $300 @ $22 a quart Mobil 1 for my oil change and I thought that was a bit ridiculous. I looked around a bit on the forums and I think I was right to not get my oil change done there but I wanted to know if maybe this price is accurate now due to inflation. Also, I was told that I could void my warranty if I do the oil change myself. Is this true ? And if not what exact oil should I be putting in my car ? Because I was also told to make sure that if I take it somewhere else that they are using the correct oil. I do not plan on ever tracking my car if that effects the type of oil I should use.

$300 for an oil change is beyond ridiculous, even by dealership standards.

I do it myself for $6 for a pf64 oil filter and I get the oil at about $6 a quart on sale at AutoZone. So that's under $70 doing it yourself. Dealers get the oil and filters in bulk for much cheaper than that. I wouldn't pay a dealer anything as I don’t trust them to check my tire pressures, but I wouldn't pay more than $100 for an oil change done by a dealer.

I thought it was going to be $150, which I was fine with, but then I get there and they tell me $300 because the car takes 10 quarts and they charge $22 a quart. I almost left it too, since this is my first V8 car, and I knew these things are pay to play, but then I got the sense to look around a bit more to find a cheaper place. I think I'm going to take it somewhere cheaper for this first time and then do it myself. Could you tell me exactly what oil and filter to use?

I use AC Delco PF64 oil filter which is what the dealer would use. I get them at my local Walmart for under $7 each. I use Mobil 1 ESP 0w40 oil which is Dexos 2 approved and what our cars require. I get it on sale at AutoZone and end up paying about $6 a quart. There is no need to pay a dealer anywhere near $300. That is legalized theft imho.

Like others have said, $300 is highway robbery for an oil change and no, doing maintenance yourself will NOT void your warranty (unless you screw it up).

You want an AC Delco PF64 Oil Filter and you'll need 10 quarts of one of the following oils:

Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP Formula (Dexos 2)
Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP X3 (Dexos 2)
Mobil 1 0W-40 SuperCar (Dexos R) (Dexos R is backwards compatible with Dexos 2)

Thank you guys. I will probably get it done myself then, with an Uncle's help. Also, 2SS* Capt, I am a huge fan of your build man. I am looking into getting MRR017 wheels too, since I currently have the carbon flash metallic wheels.

Thanks! I appreciate it!

You'll love the MRR017's and wider tires!

If you'll be doing them yourself, you might want to pick up an oil filter wrench for the PF64 filter. I picked up a nice aluminum one on Amazon for under $10. Makes it easy to remove the filter if it's on their really tight.

Thanks for the tip man. My uncles sort of a mechanic, I’m assuming he should have one ? Or is it a specific wrench needed for our cars ?

I have a similar car to yours, 2SS non-1le with MRC and NPP, except mine is black. Looking to do some of the same mods you have done. Will I be forced to get the wider 285/305 tires if I buy the MRR017’s?

It's best to use the Dexos rather than the European blend

I have this one from Amsoil, but since you'll discard the filter anyway, you can just smash a big screwdriver through it and use that as leverage if necessary (I never had to do that on the Camaro). These should be only hand tight anyway, hopefuly nobody used an impact wrench on yours.

By the way, the normal price for Mobil1 0W-40 oil should be $7-8 a quart, I never paid more than $120 for an oil change at the dealership. These people are trying to take advantage of you.

This is the one I picked up: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BM39BCZ1?psc=1

Not strictly needed, but nice and cheap and gets the job done.

You'll need wider than stock tires since the stock wheels are 8.5" & 9.5" wide and the MRR017's ar 10.0" & 11.0" wide... Trust me, you'll appreciate the extra grip!
