P0420 and P0430 after Longtube Headers

Is there anyway to permanently disable these codes? I know there wasn’t an installation issue because the Tuner said everything looked fine on their side and there were no leaks. I know tuners avoid the emissions sensor like the boogeyman but it really sucks not having auto start and having a CEL on 24/7.

If anyone else had this issue how did you fix it? Do the mini cat spacers that go on the 02 sensor work?

These may be permanent codes that cannot be erased. AFAIK the tuner is supposed to disable such codes prior to first starting the car after header installation, otherwise the codes will stick around...

This topic has been discussed at length on this board with the warning that this was the deal. You have to tune out hardware codes BEFORE you install the new equipment. And now that HP Tuners is no longer allowing that, you’ll need to run cats of some kind of sufficient quality to allow the exhaust to pass the car’s diagnostic checks. Permanent codes will not go away as Arpad alluded to. The car has to see that the problem has been resolved.

so will kooks cats prevent the codes from tripping?

I am running Kooks headers with cats and with a proper tune, the codes will not appear.

When I had my car tuned, I asked my tuner about disabling the codes. He said that he does not do that and disabling codes is a bad idea. Properly tuned, you won't get codes. But you do need the Kooks cats.

The only time I have thrown codes with the Kooks headers was when an O2 sensor backed out and was loose. Another time, I just need to retorque the header bolts after a few heat cycles and the codes I was getting went away.

When did this change? When I got my headers it was tuned out summer of 2021?

With MPVI3 and VCM software 5.x.

Worth holding on to 4.x if you have it, although I'm not sure you can get away with never connecting to their servers again, at which point they can still do whatever they want, say, block your ability to tune using the older version. (I don't know for sure, because haven't tried to read/write anything since their new software came out.)

The permanent code issue has been a thing since the E92A in 2017. HP Tuners older versions would let you shut off the code (proactively) like Arpad said. You could then add headers and be home free. But, you still couldn’t make a permanent code go away once you had it! You could shut off the Check Engine Light, but the code was actually still there which would be detected during plug in emissions testing…. Now, the problem is even worse because you cannot touch emissions functions with the newest version of HP Tuners.

May need to be the Green Cats since they’re rated 49 state legal. The high flow ones often don’t have enough substrate to satisfy the post cat O2 sensors.

Can't speak to the high flow cats but I also have the Kooks green cats and have had no issues or codes.

I feel dirty. Driving around with a perma code I can't see. lol, but I'm glad I can't see it either way.
