Whipple 3.0 vs 2.9 comparison

Well I was able to get my brother Jake over today to give me a hand with getting the blower upgrade underway. Anyone who thinks the blower is just a small bump in size from 2.9 to 3.0 is completely missing the boat! Huge differences! The new 3.0 is TALL. Rotor pack is much shorter which will allow a higher critical speed (not to mention 4x3 instead of the old 5x3). The snout is now wide open (something the 2.9 couldn’t get even after porting). You’re able to bolt it down to the heads without removing the lid. And the difference in heat exchangers is crazy. The new HX is dual pass and massive…takes up the whole lid (the 2.9 used two smaller HXs as pictured below). Unfortunately for me the new pulley is 5-bolt with a bigger hole for the upgraded shaft diameter, so my 4-bolt 2.9 pulleys do not work on the new blower. It also appears that I can just bolt up my Katech 112mm TB without an adapter too, so that’s nice. More to come as this gets underway….

Hopefully the new one is not as bad as the old one. Tons of gen 5 failures over the last two years.

Not sure what you’re referring to. The 2.9 was offered in Gen3 and Gen4 configurations. The Gen5 is the new 3.0.

Also my 2.9 is 4 years and over 1100 crank HP…hard to complain.

For sure. I was at 955 WHP with the 2.9, so 1K is definitely not out of the picture with the new 3.0. Not sure about my fueling though. I’m DI only with the LPE pump/+52% injectors/Fore Triple (no meth either). But buying the blower and 15” conversion was enough for now lol…I’ll add PI a little further down the road.

I'm wondering if you should have the runners drilled and just plugged for now. I'm thinking about this myself on which way to go. Mag with plates or Whipple with pi mod. Gotta decide very quickly my season starts shortly.

Josh- I think he meant the Gen 5 Camaros? Not the Gen5 motor (LT1) per say.. (not sure what he meant by tons of failures, as I scanned both Camaro5 and 6 forums and didn't see all these 'failures'. Where is the documentation to this comment?) If the Whipple 3.0 is as good as the ones on the boats with the super chillers, then they will be a good upgrade. Hopefully will compete with the 2650's out there...

Ted- Mike at Katech is working on the PI for the runners on the Whipple, and is close to release. Maybe give them a call to see the ETA. (May be cheaper then the Maggie with the TooHighPSI plates, but who knows)

Agree...there have been some 2.9 issues on the LT platform but there are also plenty of us that haven't had any issues with them.

Josh- keep that spare Bosch pump... mine took a dump during break in on the lift, so Whipple is sending another one ASAP... hopefully the car will be done by week's end unless something else fails...lol

Negative my friend. I’m not using the Varimax pump (originally came with the 2.9) anymore and I’m not using the Bosch pump (that came with the 3.0) as the flow is only 4.4 GPM at 12 PSI or so (technically 1000 liters/hour at .85 bar, I looked it up on Bosch’s site), making it similar in performance to a stock LT4 IC pump. No bueno. I’m going with a Pierburg 150 which will do over 10 GPM at 12 PSI.

So a small update: the new 3.0 does NOT fit with the Katech AFM-delete valley cover. The hefty PCV boss on the cover interferes with the blower snout. Well, it did…but we broke out the die grinder for some “clearancing” action You have to be care not to get into the PCV plug sealing o-ring but this picture shows it about 60-70% of the way there before calling it a night. We’ll take a little more off, touch up the black finish, then hopefully bolt the damn blower down! I gave Mike @ Katech a heads up too so maybe they can address it during the next cover production run… or just grind away.
