Carbon Fiber Wheel

Guys,
Need some guidance here please

Pushed the button on a CF wheel from Matt at Wild Hammer for my 2018 2SS last year. What a beauty! Looks and feels so much better than OEM. Heated option delete but hey ho.
So at last its install time seeing as the nice weather has stirred up the gray matter.
So ive done my research and gathered tools and stuff together.
1/2" T50 torx (quality item)
Torque wrench and breaker bar.
Impact wrench..air and electric.
I can handle the air bag and electrics but its alignment with the clock spring and the splines on the steering shaft.. will it only go back in one position?
Also the crazy stories im readfing about the steering wheel bolt and the loctite... are they ALL like that or might I get lucky?
I dont want to mess anything up as a failure on this could result in a big headache.
Thoughts and inspiration guys??

Regarding the steering wheel position just be gentle taking it off to avoid moving the clock spring and if the wheel is perfectly at 12 o’clock when you take it off it will be obvious if you put it back slightly sideways. The loctite the factory uses is crazy, I snapped an Amazon “impact rated” T50 1/2” socket with a 1/2” impact but I probably should have just bought a real brand. Either way it came off with the normal one I had in the tool chest but it definitely took the impact several whacks to break it loose so be prepared for a fight to get it off. It’s super straight forward otherwise, and pretty obvious if something is off center so you should be fine.

Hi FrostZ,

Thanks for the heads up

Ye I get the picture now about the wheel. The impression im getting is if it is one spline out then I will notice. Especially if the wheel is at 12 o'clock!

Did you damage the bolt when the torq broke? Just wondering if its worth buying another just in case.

Think I better blow the dust off that impact too!

Thanks again

Same here after worrying about it, just did it. One very good video on youtube. Took maybe 30 minutes total and is an awesome upgrade.

No damage to the bolt or any issues.

Bolt didn’t suffer a scratch, can’t say the day for the poor quality T50 but nothing interior related suffered even a scratch on the job. As long as you are even slightly careful you should be completely fine.

Well you guys were right. It was a snip!
The pesky bolt came out with a full blast from the impact gun.
The hardest part was re-torqueing it up to 33 ft/lb.
Its not much but I could only get to 30 with one hand holding the wheel steady. I should have got the GF to hold it (and the wheel)
Anyway plenty of loctite and that aint goin nowhere.
Not sure about the paddle extensions..will have to think on that.
Thanks a bunch guys.. this forum rocks

Looks amazing

These paddle extensions I'm not a fan of, because they cover up a good chunk of the tach and the speedo. Carbonaddons sells extended paddles that are actual replacements and not tack-ons, those are shorter and most likely better in terms of DIC visibility.

Thanks for that arpad...ye its not a big deal to pull the sticky ones off.
I will check out the carbon addon items. Install is easy by the looks of it. Just remove the airbag again and release the paddle switch screws.
Talking of airbag., can you tell me if I have an issue?
Sounds stupid but I am not sure if the horn is working correctly.
Cant remember how it was before but to make it blast I have to press in the middle of the airbag with the palm of my hand. It wont go off if I press round the edges.
I was driving the neighbours nuts last night testing it

Yeah, that's how the horn is supposed to work, all good there.

When I installed my red paddles (designed for the C7 but also work with the Camaro), I disconnected the battery and waited 15 minutes before popping the airbag, just to be on the safe side. You won't have a problem, find the proper screwdriver or a simple metal rod to release the spring clips, check out paddle installation videos on youtube. Taking off the paddle shifters is trivial, they're held in place by one small allen bolt each (or was it torx? can't remember now, sorry ).
