2023 SILVERADO 1500
been saving up lately and looking at new trucks since my camaro is long paid off and my cruze is paid off also and want to start towing next year
ill have to buy a trailer but that will come later but if you guys were looking at a truck to be a daily and tow once a month or so would you be looking at 5.3 or the baby diesel? ive never been a truck guy so dont know much about this stuff i appreciate any help! thanks https://www.chevrolet.com/trucks/silverado/1500

I had both 5.3 and Duramax, (I know you said baby Dura) depends on the weight you will be towing , also go for the longer wheel base .

I had a 2020 Trail Boss with the 6.2. Absolutely loved that truck and it towed beautifully. Sold it for a profit.

I'll never go back to a gas truck after having a 3.0 Babymax, it is freaking awesome. Mines a 2022 Ltz Updated with the cool ass big screen and the 2023s have 30 more lbs of torque
460 mine and the 2023 has 490 plus almost 40 more hp than mine. Mine gets about 30 mpg on a good day with not a lot of wind and down to about 27 on a windy day of travel. I average about 25 mpg daily and hwy combined, but towing is also impressive with about 18 mpg towing 6200 lbs. We went to the LS Fest last Sept and got almost 19.5 down there and about 17.5 coming home into some bad weather. Love it and highly recommend it over any of the 5.3s or 6.2s which I've had plenty of. I traded in a 2021 Ltz with a 6.2 and I'll never look back. Yes diesel is higher buy you'll still save money over 12,000 miles you'll still save money but the gas truck will never haul like this diesel. Mine came with 20s but my dealership had some new takeoff 22s so run those in good weather and the 20s with AT tires in the winter.

My preference would be gasoline over diesel. FWIW, take my opinion with a grain of salt. I'm not a truck guy and I'm pretty new to towing. Others will have far more experience and, perhaps, a more valid opinion.
I plan to use my wife's GLE (7700 lb towing capacity with that little turbo 4 lol) this season to tow the ZLE, but I've been thinking about getting rid of my CTS Wagon DD for something that can tow. Personally, I lean towards a Tahoe or Suburban for something that would be daily driven and used to tow once a month or so. I think it provides more utility as a DD and is just as capable as a tow vehicle.

I daily/tow with a 21 Trail Boss with the 6.2. I have an 18' Aluma trailer....truck doesn't even know its towing anything. Back when we were running dirt tracks all over the country, we towed with a 2500 HD with the 6.6 Duramax...completely different animal. That truck didn't care what was hooked to it.

Have a 2020 6.2 TrailBoss with 29k miles. (Pic attatched)Don't do alot of towing but LOVE this truck. Have had no issues with it since I bought it new in April of 2020. Work with guys that have a 2023 ZR2 with a 6.2, he loves that truck, one guy that has a GMC Elevation with Diesel- he loves it, and another guy with a 2021 with the Duramax and he loves that one...so really just seems like whichever one YOU like, go with it

I’m a 2500 guy. I’m much more comfortable towing with a 2500 than a 1500.

I've had a few diesels over the years but always 3/4 or 1 tons. I hated smelling like a diesel mechanic after every stop for fuel and screwing around with def. I said I'd never buy another. I just bought a GMC Denali with the 6.2l but not for towing. I'm done doing that since moving north and getting rid of my cars I'd take to NSRA and Goodguys shows.
I don't know anything about the GM 5.3l but I wasn't happy towing with a Ram 5.7l. Just not enough ummph. If you're looking at a little open trailer, I would guess either will do fine.

None of the above. Gm still has issues with rockers failing on both the 5.3 and 6.2 engines. And new Duramax owners are reporting excessive oil consumption already. It's evidently so bad that gm is actually overfilling the 3.0 Duramax now from the factory by 1 qt so new truck owners don't run low before their first oil change.

Having owned (2) 5.3l and now the 6.6l Duramax 2500. I prefer the 6.6l. Really quick off the line and towing is great. The 5.3 was good on gas, but never really enjoyed it. If you do go with the 5.3 we see if you can get it with the 10 speed transmission. Much better.
If I was going with the 1500 would go with the 6.2 or the Duramax. Have had both the Sierra and Silverado, prefer the look of the Z71, TrailBoss or the AT4. Best of luck in your decision. |

With the price of diesel being sky high in so many places, and knowing how well the 6.2 does economy-wise, why wouldn't you go with the 6.2 gas engine in the truck?

I currently drive a 2018 GMC sierra 1500. I almost traded it for a 2022 but I really like my column shifter and I really hate big screens in cars.
If I were buying a new truck now I'd have to look hard at the 2500s, Depending on how long you keep cars and all. The day will come you want a covered trailer to tow the car and wheels and tools and maybe a couch to hang out at the track. I don't care what 1500 you have, it's going to struggle or at best take a beating on the drive train. Those covered trailers have a lot of wind resistance to them. I'm going to keep my GMC sierra and see what comes up but everything loaded has a large screen in it these days and I just can't get into it. I might get a 2500 and outfit it to not have a dumb ass tv in the front. |
