I got pulled over doing 25 in a 30 for what the officer stated as "loud exhaust". It was lunch time and I was so surprised to see the lights flash behind me. I have an AWE Touring non-resonated cat-back. He asked if the car had headers - I said no. He told me to pop the hood to verify and saw the RF intake. I told him the exhaust was only a cat-back and once he saw there was no headers he did not cite me for the loud exhaust but state ref'd me for the intake saying I needed a CARB sticker.

The violation was CVC 27156(b). He wrote is as correctable, and so I'm assuming just swap the intake to stock and have it state ref'd and that's it? Good to go? Maybe $100 fine?

I hear mixed stories about people saying the state refs will also test the loudness of the exhaust but I was not cited for that. See below for an excerpt from the BAR website:

If cited for 27156 (modified emission controls): The vehicle must pass a complete Referee inspection, which includes ensuring the vehicle’s computer programing is not tampered. It is strongly recommended the vehicle has no modified equipment or modified programing prior to making your Referee appointment. Failure to correct any modifications prior to the Referee appointment will result in significant delays.

California Vehicle Code section 27150.2.(a) prohibits BAR’s Referee contractor from performing an exhaust noise test on a vehicle unless the vehicles has been cited for violating Vehicle Code section 27150 or 27151.

He told me the officers have been told to crack down on cars that sound or look modified because of the growing popularity of street takeovers So for those that participate in that, screw you for making it harder for us in an already difficult state.

Talk to a lawyer and see if you have a harassment case and sue.



They're now doing this zero policy "crack down" on street take overs... (from an insider) Ultimately, they are trying to show the public how bad it is so they can try to implement this new law that's a disguise for spreed traffic cameras. Thus, another tax money grab....

This is the specific reason I have been so hesitant about adding anything to my 1LE as well. They get you up in the Long Beach area? Best of luck when you have see the Ref.

That sucks. Seems like SoCal has way more a-hole cops than NorCal, luckily. I stay out of Oakland, where all the sideshows are, though.

Yeah they got me in the afternoon right at about 12:30 around lunch time. Like I said I wasn't speeding or anything. I'm super surprised this happened here in Long Beach as this is usually a friendly car city. I guess it was just the case of wrong place, wrong time with the wrong cop. His supervisor told them to crack down bc of the street takeovers so that could be it. All in all, it looks like it's not something to worry about it only really starts screaming when you get on it and the downshifts can get pretty brutal with the pops and crackling. I made my appointment with the BAR, June 1st. We shall see how this plays out.

Man, that sucks. I always felt that cops are more likely to target modded looking cars at night on weekends or ones that fit a certain profile. Wouldn't expect a normal drive mid day to cause problems, maybe it was just a wrong place wrong time with a cop having a bad day. I'm assuming you don't have NPP?

Would cops be able to tell if you had headers? Can you play dumb and not answer or be vague like "changed the air filter, bought the car like this."

Do you NEED to go to state ref or can you just pay the "bail" and essentially plead guilty?

Agree. That's why it's frustrating reading about this. I can see it if he was reving at a stoplight or doing a quick burnout or takeoff once it went green, but seems like a cheapshot from a cop to cite him. I bet he doesn't stop Lambos or Ferraris that are loud, lol. Bottom line, if they want to stop takeovers, then they should focus on stopping takeovers. Use undercover cops or something lol. Send patrol units around the hot spots at 11pm. Stopping random guys at lunch time isn't going to solve the problem.

ive had intake and exhaust and headers from the first year ive had my car almost 40k no issues never been pulled over and most cops dont even look at me but im always cautious when i see cops when im out driving around

You've been lucky. I was not revving, speeding, or doing anything stupid. In addition, the cop was no where to be seen. He must have followed me from a perpendicular street as I was driving normally and well below the speed limit through.

Not worth it for my level of mods. I'm not tuned and only have a TB & RF, swapped back to stock in 20 minutes. State ref appt is this Monday. We'll see what happens.

goodluck ive heard about people not passing even with stock exhaust lol my buddy got a 23 1le out of state and hes having a hard time passing smog bone stock
