10L80 / 10L90 Correct Fill Temp

So, I have, and have had for a while now, some banging / clanging when going between reverse and drive quickly and between drive and park / vice versa. There’s also a delayed slack type of transition feel when this happens… which seems much more prevalent when the the transmission is under ~ 140 (what the dash reads). Otherwise, the car shifts great.

I plan to check the fluid level once the fill adapter and the fluid arrives (this week). What I really need to know is what temp should the fluid be when checking the level? I watched YouTube video and it said 170+, which seems pretty high. Going by the dash, the highest temp I’ve seen is around 148F. I plan on using a laser gun pointed at the pan. Is 170F the correct #?

If the fluid is fine, off to a dreaded dealer visit I go

Thanks..

Since no one answered… I found the info on my own. Figured someone else may need it, at some point.

Captain,

Was thinking the exact same thing. A *nine degree* window of proper temp range, i.e., around 2.x% variance if in the 170's? Hope that TFT is accurate, if so much depends on getting it right.

Did you do the fluid change? How's the trans acting now?

What's interesting is this manual is different from the procedure that everyone lists from Weber Auto on YouTube:

I’m pretty sure the manual above is the one that the gentleman from Weber was reading from explaining the procedure in their video

I see what you mean about different, the check temp has changed with this manual 75-80 instead of 95-100

Yep, I changed mine at the higher temps. It was difficult getting the trans to that temp by power braking. That may be why they changed it. May be a little under filled now. Looks like it needs to be put back on the lift and checked at this temp. I’ll see how much fluid it takes.
