What is this?
I would assume this means the wheels have been "dipped" but what throws me off is the dealership told me when I bought it (used) that it was bought at an auction and was previously a rental car. If they are dipped who in the world dips wheels on a rental?
The reflection of my lawn is on the wheels so it looks different in person. Up close it looks almost identical in color. It wasn't obvious until I got right up to it and saw it was flaking off

a little hard to tell without seeing it up close but it looks like clear coat peeling to me also.

I had the exact thing happen on a Pontiac G8 GT. Kept the car a couple years after it started and other than the flaking appearance nothing detrimental actually happened to the wheels. Almost no one even notice it until I would point it out.

As others mentioned, it looks like the clear coat from your wheel is peeling off.

That's the original finish - and it is flaking off. Probably got hit by something, cracked, and water has gotten under the finish.

The wheels are silver painted aluminum. Your paint is flaking off.

Agree the paint is flaking off which may have been caused by caustic wheel cleaners being used by the previous owner or maybe the finish is defective. Some of the factory wheels have had this problem and were replaced under warranty.
