Acceptable / Normal Oil Consumption?
Quick question to those who keep track of their Oil levels.
Would you say that consumption of ~ 1 Quart per 2,850 Miles in the LT1 is acceptable / OK? Thanks for your contributions. |

Personally I would not be happy with that. Mine has 3300 or so miles and I can't tell it has used any.

Thanks for the input.
I am talking middle of the Hashmarks on the Dipstick, after it was at the full mark (2580 miles ago) at the top of the Hashmarks right after the oil change. |

1 qt. per 3000 miles is considered normal consumption.
More than that and they will have you do an oil study. |

I was told that for DI engines, higher oil consumption is to be expected (compared to the non-DI engines, I.E. LS series) |

When I worked at a dealership the industry standard is one quart per thousand, sucks but thats the standard they abide by. One quart in 3K would not seem unreasonable, not great but I wouldn't be trading it in.

Good Info.
Another question that might further help in diagnosing if consumption is actually as I think it is: Between the lowest and highest points within the Hashmarks region on the Dipstick, how much of actual oil quantity does it translate? |

Hmm, idk. First oil change was just off the full mark, so maybe 1/4 qt at most. Currently still dead on the full mark since the last change.

I have no idea what is considered ‘acceptable’ but I put around 30,000 miles on my 2016 SS and it never showed any noticeable oil consumption. I’m at 22,000 on my 2018 SS and it’s the same, never a need to add oil between changes.

1500 miles after the last oil change, no appreciable loss, level is still at the top of the hashmarks on the dipstick (and exactly 10 qts were used for the fill). In fact I never recall any significant oil consumption, and I've had a supercharger for over a year now.
Given many others have a similar experience, I think 1 qt per 3000 miles would be on the high side.

Can anyone comment on what is the actual oil quantity from the lowest part of the hashmarks to the highest point of the hashmarks on the dipstick?
This could help indicate how much oil is being consumed from full (Top of the hashmarks) I.E. immediately after the Oil change schedule, to the next measurement. |

my car was consuming quite a bit of oil until i switched from m1 5w30 to 0w40. it was around 10k miles, as well. i was adding a qt of 5w30 every 3k miles. i have 4500 miles on this 0w40 and haven’t added any. judging by the dipstick, i won’t have to add any before i change the oil again. it appears that the consumption has almost completely stopped. not sure if because oil weight, mileage on motor, or both.

After 2,850 Miles, the oil was right in the middle of the Hashmarks. I made certain that after the last oil change, (2,850 miles ago), the oil stood right at the top point on the Hashmarks. If from min. to max. it is indeed 1 Quart, then it is fair to assume that from max.- to mid. area of the hashmarks, it would be ~ 0.7 of a Quart (since I guess that the reading within the hashmarks area is not exactly linear). This would effectively mean that the consumption of my engine was more like ~ 22.5 oz per 2,850 Miles. This does not seem like an abnormal consumption for a DI engine? |
