It sounded like he said they had also used the 5th gen ZL1 rear diff in addition to the other parts.

I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents here and say there is more to a differential than maximum horsepower it can hold. If you are building a drag car that may see limited road time at legal highway speeds then no problem with a relatively simple, very beefy Drag rear-end. If you are doing road racing for 30+ min or high speed runs of any kind you should probably make sure your diff has some cooling like the stock differentials have. I remember my Gen2 CTS-V had a diff temp sensor and no factory cooling and that thing would overheat everytime I made a spirited summer trip between my house and OKC or Dallas. Forget trying to do a whole session at the road course in the summer.

Plus the abruptness of the diff lock can affect maximum speed you can carry around a corner before track out when you want to go to full power. If you have a lot of power then that snap oversteer can be kind of a pain if you are trying to shave lap times.

If it is all about drag racing.... stronger is better but not everyone building high power Camaros is focused on 1/4 mile cars.

I guess my point is the GM ZL1 parts may not be quite as beefy as some on the aftermarket parts but if you swap that in you are going to get a lot more than just a stronger rear-end. It is going to work very well at ALL racing venues. And Unless you are well over 1000whp I doubt you could break it.

It's a good point that may impact me even though it's not going to be a road race car. I did see one place that made aftermarket coolers but it was for other diff units. Hopefully they release a cooling unit with the kit. Since it's mainly a street car for me and I don't see how we could use the gen6 ZL1 diff, I might be stuck with the stock unit. I really don't want to end up like the GT350 guys who opted to skip the cooling. It's such a problem for them that they filed a class action suit...and a lot of cases of street/highway only use leading to overheating. I think it could completely ruin the diff if it overheats too.

LOL, that's my goal! I should be fine for a while on the stock stuff. It's still too cold and there's salt all over the roads. By the time it warms up here there should be at least one 9" kit out there, so we can see if it'll work for DD and the strip. Until then I'll have to live vicariously through you

From my other post, a Zl1 manual driveshaft bolted into my SS no problem.
I now have both ZL1 axle shafts and the driver's side is a direct bolt in, the passenger side requires a 3/4 shim that I'm milling from the back of a stock SS shaft. I'm only dropping the exhaust and doing LG cutouts at the same time. Not removing any suspension arms.
