Speculation of weight loss using CTS weight loss

Since we all like speculating about the weight of the new Camaro I came across the weight of the third gen CTS that is a couple hundred pounds lighter than the previous gen CTS that was on the Zeta platform.

According to Cadillac's website The 2014 Cadillac (Sedan) with the 3.6 engine weigh's 3,757 to 3,845 depending on whether it's the Sport, Luxury or Premium spec, but all with the 3.6L Engine.

According to this Car & Driver article the 2012 Cadillac CTS Sedan weigh's around 4,072. Again, this is with the 3.6L engine

The difference in weight between the 2012 (on the Zeta platform) and the 2014 (on the Alpha platform) is anywhere from 230 to 315 pound difference, depending on the spec of the 2014.

Now all I know is that both are rear wheel drive with the 3.6L (LFX) engine, other than that I'm not sure the major differences aside from platform. Obviously this is looking at a luxury Cadillac and not a sporty Chevrolet but hopefully we will see a similar weight loss.

Thoughts?

The old CTS was on Sigma II which shared some parts with Zeta but was not identical to Zeta.

But I think your basic point is correct. It won't be surprising if the Camaro too drops ~200 lbs.

I'd prefer (but would also be shocked by) a more substantial 10% haircut (~375 lbs).

Yeah, since the old CTS isn't Zeta, that changes the comparison a bit, but not sure by how much.

That said I still think 200ish - 250lbs isn't out of the question at all. I'm sticking with my guns and saying 3,450 - 3,550 lbs for V6 and 3,550 - 3,650 for the V8.

Maybe even less than 3,450 for a base stripper V6.

Turbo 4....no real idea on that one, but will say 3,400 to 3,450 range.

The base ATS weighs under 3,400 lbs, but we don't know exactly what version of Alpha they will be using for the Camaro, since Alpha can change to accommodate different vehicles.

Good point however it appears that the Sigma II shares a lot with the Zeta:

"The Sigma II platform debuted with the 2008 Cadillac CTS, and is larger and wider than its predecessor. However, it is more flexible; sharing more parts with the larger Zeta platform than it does with the Sigma I platform."

This is from wikipedia do take it for what it's worth. Article

2015 ATS Coupe is 3418 lbs w/2.0 Turbo. A v-8 model will add beefier components, etc. I think we'll come in at best about 200lbs less than the Gen5 w/V-8 as others have said.

If that's the case, we better hope the Mustang doesn't lose any weight at all.

Keep in mind that luxury cars from Cadillac will tend to weigh more than their Chevrolet stablemates.

True but a lot of people are pushing for those luxuries to cross over to Chevy vehicles.

A lot of people that post on here don't have a say in that. While they consider our feedback, it is their duty to keep the Chevy and Cadillac brands separate, and that requires more distinction than a different badge.

A Chevrolet will not and should never be anywhere near as luxurious as a Cadillac. End of story.

I understand that and would never want that. I don't want a car packed full of features I would never use. It seems, thought, that I am a minority that is growing smaller all the time. The Z/28 forum is a good place to see how people view more features as more important than performance.

There are a lot of Camaro enthusiasts who won't admit that what they really want is a Cadillac.

For me, I would love to see the 6th Gen around 3,400-3,500lbs. with the V-8, 2.0L turbo around 3,250-3,300lbs .....

Ok just to check what features on a Cadillac do you guys think don't belong on a highly optioned Gen 6 Camaro? Keep in mind the Gen5 launched with NO NAV, NO height adjustable passenger seat crappy sun visors, etc.

Go down the option list for features available on an Impala and you will see a long list of things not currently on the Camaro.......that should AND will be. Doesn't make it a Cadillac. GM will fail to exist if they continue to think the way to differentiate Cadillac and Chevy is to just hold back common every day feature available on Ford and Toyota.

And I'll say it again if an LT1 8 speed SS Camaro weighs less than 3650 pounds and costs within 10% of a current car you will have one of the most incredible engineering feets in auto history.

Keep in mind a C7 with an aluminum frame and Carbon Fiber is weighing in over 3,300 pounds now. How on earth can anyone think a Camaro can weigh within 200 pounds of that without costing an arm and a leg?
