What happens if you...

What happens if you completely remove the rear quarter 6.5" speakers (cause they are useless) and connect 6x9s (2way or 3 way)instead and mount them to the deck lid with boxes. Would that give a better sound you think and balance?

Keep in mind this would only apply to 1SSs.

Or would that rear quarter signal not be strong enough to push a 6x9?

In general I would not expect much gain from swapping a 6.5" speaker for a 6x9.
With a speaker-for-speaker swap, your gains are going to come from:
1) increased sensitivity (maybe 1-3 dB)
2) decreased impedance

I don't know the impedance of the stock 6.5 speaker in the 1SS. If it is 4 ohm, you could get significant increase in volume going from 4 to 3 ohm or 4 to 2 ohm. The stock amp has to be able to handle that. If the stock speakers are already 2 ohm (like they are in the Bose systems) you really have nowhere to go without adding an amp.

Also, I thought the stock rear side speakers were 4", but the space will easily accommodate a 6.5 speaker if you go aftermarket.

I would upgrade speakers and add a amp that will probably be the only way your going to be happy

Here are some photos of the rear side panels removed. Bose system, but they do look to be 4".

I have some 2 ohm 6.5" coaxials laying around. I am going to swap those in soon to see if it makes any difference. I am not expecting miracles, but since I already have the speakers, I figured it was worth a try. I have some test tone mp3's and a sound level meter, so I should be able to measure any change.
