My question - I've always wanted to have an high capacity magazine weapon, whether it be an assault rifle or submachine gun, simply for variety, pleasure of shooting and home defense.

What is a better option - submachine gun, or assault rifle?

Also, I'm not looking to drop 2 grand on a damn gun - some people are enthusiasts and I can understand that, but I'd like to be able to scoop a nice assault rifle/SMG for under $800 or $1000. Any suggestions of brands/types/calibers to look into as well?
You can get an ar for 600 on up to however much you want to spend...

And furthermore, I am assuming you mean semi-automatic versions of submachine guns.

Because a submachine gun is usually defined as a fully automatic, pistol-caliber carbine. And as I'm sure you're aware, a fully automatic weapon requires a bunch of BATFE paperwork, and may not even be legal in your state...

Something like an H&K MP5SFA2 (the semi-auto variant of the MP5-A2 submachine gun) would run you several thousand dollars.

Whereas a decent AR-15 could be had for around $800...

It's been this way since Obama got into office 4 years ago. I started building ARs about 4 years ago and even then the supply couldn't keep up with the demand. Everywhere I go to order parts tells me 3-4 months wait and this was just a couple weeks ago before all this happened.
