Gas Cap No Locking?

So I read somewhere that we are supposed to have a gas cap locking mechanism, but it looks like mine does not lock even though the car is!

Bad part? the Cap actually has a hole where it looks like it will lock into but on the car doesn't have the locking !

Pictures here!

Most American cars don't lock, I never understood that.

I remember reading something about this. It unlocks just like the doors. When the key is in proximity it is unlocked.

Have you tried it when your key isn't near the car?

Edit: I do worry if that is the way it works. Lot of excess locking/unlocking. I can see the lock mechanism eventually failing. I see no problem having to push a button to trigger the lock.

Yup! but if you look at the pictures, there is no actual locking mechanism.

Ohhh I see where the mechanism would be now. I initially thought it was the nub sticking up near the gas cap. Instead it's the recessed area below the nub.

Well damn I'm not sure which is worse. Giving away free gas or having a locking mechanism wear out. Glad I have a security camera on my driveway (nice deterrent).

And, yes you are right. I could have sworn that it was supposed to be a locked fuel door.

Well my car is garaged and gated with security cam so im good, and im pretty sure you can't siphon gas.

Although I am wondering if i've been jipped a feature!

The only locking gas cap I've seen is on the European spec Gen5 Camaro SS.

I bought this part 23159210 which is what comes as standard on the European models and added it to my US spec car.

There really isn't a reason to lock the gas door anymore. Cars have a screen in the filler tube to prevent someone from putting a tube down in them to syphon out the gas.

I was more concerned about what someone might put into the tank. Each to their own though, if I lived in USA or Canada I probably wouldn't care, but the Camaro is very rare where I live.

I do not think we have keys any more though. I know we have a key fob. Not sure a key is in it ? Find out shortly.

I don't think people are worried about syphoning. I think they are worried about someone adding something to the tank for revenge
