GM 8L45 8 speed transmission

Some more info on the possible transmission for the V6 Camaros.

Along with debuting a new engine family for the upcoming luxury sedan, Cadillac today rolled out a new 8L45 eight-speed automatic transmission to debut in the 2016 CT6 later this month. The new eight-speed paddle shift transmission will also become available in the mid-size CTS and compact ATS for the 2016 model year, the automaker announced.

The 8L45 transmission, based on the same eight-speed transmission family as the 8L90 introduced in the 2015 Corvette Z06, will be available on 3.6-liter versions of the CT6, on 2.0- and 3.6-liter versions of the CTS and on 2.0-, 2.5- and 3.6-liter versions of ATS. The transmission has been scaled to match the performance on offer from less powerful engines, with the 8L90 serving in high horsepower and high torque applications like the ATS-V, CTS-V and twin-turbo CT6.
Like the 8L90, the 8L45 occupies the same space as GM’s previous six-speed while weighing less. The 8L45 is actually a bit smaller and approximately 33 pounds lighter than the 8L90E, but has the same grouping of four gearsets and five clutches. Also like the 8L90, the 8L45 incorporates special components necessary for supporting start/stop engines.
One of the major changes on the 8L45 vs the 8L90 is the gear ratios. With a wide 7.0 overall gear ratio and numerically higher 4.62 first gear, the 8L45 will help drivers “start off more confidently, with a greater feeling of immediate performance.” The gear ratios and smaller steps between gears also result in a 5 percent fuel economy benefit over a six-speed automatic.

“The 8L45 was designed to enhance the CT6’s driving experience, offering a strong balance between performance and efficiency,” said Bill Goodrich, GM’s assistant chief engineer for eight-speed automatic transmissions “Perhaps its best attribute will be that customers really won’t notice it – they’ll simply enjoy the CT6’s seamless, smooth driving experience and on-demand performance.”

An 8 speed paddle shift would be just about perfect, especially with a 3.91 rear end.

4.62 first gear ratio is insane. I know this is really to help acceleration with the lower hp motors with less torque; but GM should consider putting these ratios in the hi-performance variants with a different rear gear set.

Yep, guess there was truth to the rumors the ATS wouldn't fit the 8L90 and why it didn't get it this year. They were developing one specifically for the V6 engines coming.

Fits in the ATS. ATS-V has the 8L90. The issue is more like why put such a high torque capacity transmission that weighs a bit more that doesn't need that much transmission. Hence 8L45. Handle the 3.6 na and the 2.0T better.

GM already has the 8 speed Aisin transmission in the CTS. This is just the in house 8 speed for the lower output powertrains.

Not sure this means across the board application replacing the current 6 speed or not.

Actually the reason was in the info I just overlooked it....start/stop capability. But I agree they probably took the opportunity to save on lowered torque capacity.

I thought another reason for the lessor trans was to clear the trans tunnel in the Camaro variation of the ATS?

Considering what we know about the chassis being 70% unique to the Camaro, I would say they designed it to easily accommodate the 8L90, which is bigger and heavier than this new unit I believe. Neither trans has been confirmed for the Camaro, but it seems like a sure bet.

Thanks for resurrecting this!! I may end up getting a V6 dependent on how much weight is cut on it.
