Agree, looking at GM Dexos list it seems not up to date and some of the naming conventions seem confusing as well. I think if I were bent on running 5w vs 0w40 id go with Motul. But i think I will just switch to the factory fill Mobil1 to make it simple for myself.

Badmojo and Track Club are disagreeing but on 2 different points.
Badmojo thinks that the performance of the oil is acceptable (though his sample set is appallingly small). I will provide him some advice - if your oil analyses show a potential problem coming, that's great. But you are still paying for it yourself. Track Club is looking at warranty validity. Can't argue against his position. I'll go with Dexos2, retain my warranty and leave the arguments to the Internet warriors. Given that at my local track, I visit the rev limiter twice on a good lap, my choice will be to retain my warranty. |

You guys realize that Valvoline 5W-40 wasn't Dexos2 approved when it was in the Track Prep Guide for 2018. Your claim that losing the certification is a material problem, when it was approved for use without it is confusing.

Then, the oil name got changed to Advanced MST with Dexos2 certification. Obviously id use it if i could find it as any 5w40 Dexos2 is approved. But, Valvoline has stopped making both above oils and is now selling 5w40 as Valvoline European Vehicle. Note the different name and their public statement that its formulation has changed and the fact this new oil is not Dexos2 certified. So, nothing confusing here, as this new oil is neither mentioned in any of our manuals, nor is it Dexos2. Running improper oil wont reveal signs of troubles for a long time imo, except for pick up issues with sticy tires and high G sweepers, which could cause a motor to go boom suddenly (and that's why GM directive to use SAE 15w50 for ZL1 1LE because of G3R tires). And who knows, this new oil *might* be good, but, bottom line, it is not approved by GM anywhere hence may void the warranty if one's motor went due to whatever reason. It is that simple. So, the downside is a potential $20+k bill. What is the upside?! |

Hey folks,
I'm the motorsports guy at Valvoline. Will talk with our technical team directly and share their response as well as a spec sheet.

Thanks JP that would be great, albeit somewhat academic (yet good to know regardless). If ya could also ask them what specifically changed re formula that would be even better (as spec sheets are sometimes rather rudimentary as far as details). Cheers!

Gents,
Spoke with technical and unfortunately Valvoline had to make a tough decision regarding the MST formulation as it was losing VW & BMW credentials mid-2019, which makes up the largest population for this product. The loss of dexos2 was an unfortunate casualty of that decision and we hate to let down the enthusiast crowd who used this product in their GM Performance vehicles. With that said our 0w-40 and 5w40 are excellent options for grades. Plus we still have our VR1 line that is great for track day use.

The 0W-40 M1 ESP has better cold-start performance and less volatile base stock w/different additives which are better for DI motors and emissions equipment, afaik...

Just reference your Camaro warranty as it makes is perfectly clear as to its importance. Again, imo... |

^^ when under warranty go by the book. Post warranty 0w40 is the best alternative for our application. And for when you go full race car, VR1 10w30 or 20w50 full syn.

Amazon has a better price point for the 0w40 ESP...not $10 a quart anymore.
