Gerting READY for another TRACK DAY

Well guys, I have a 2019 SS with SG3 suspension and 1LE sway bars, ZL1 brakes front and rear, APEX 19 x 10.5 wheels wrapped with 305 30 19 MS 4S tires on all four corners, and VORSHLAG camber plates.

I have run over the last year about 15 track events and I am getting ready for another THIS saturday at Motorsports Ranch in CRESSON Texas. I HAD been running all this time the STOCK brake pads all the way around and I was pleased with the fact that they held up this well. To be sure the FRONT pads were toast and so were the rotors after these track days and about 15K miles of daily driving. The REAR brake pads still had a little wear left in them but I decided to swap them out as well.

I was able to have the front rotors turned (barely) and the rear rotors as well. I went with HAWK PERFORMANCE STREET 5.0 PADS on all four corners. I NEVER experienced any brake fad whatsoever with the STOCK pads but I felt like I needed a softer pad to provide a little more initial bite and I wanted a quicker release when coming off the brakes. So far as as STREET driving goes, this is exactly what I got so I expect that same behavoir at the track.

I was using the stock brake fluid and i never had any issues with that either but I decided to flush the system out and use for WILWOOD 600 PLUS brake fluid. Supposedly that fluid has a boilover rate at TWICE the DOT4 specs. Occasionally I could smell my brakes after a hard track session so obviously they were getting hot (but still no fade). I got THREE bottles of the brake fluid because I knew some would get flushed out when we were bleeding the brakes. You would only need 2 bottles if you were not flushing out the old fluid. The fluid is priced pretty decently at about 23.00 a bottle. I have some pics attached.

What's your best time at Cresson on the 3.1 and/or 1.7? I'm shocked you didn't have brake fade using stock DOT 3 fluid or boil the fluid. Let alone experience any pad to rotor transfer all this time. I'm going to MSR May 1-2! Good luck to you

You know thinking back on it, when AMP did the switchover to the ZL1 brake setup I think they must have used AMSOIL Brake Fluid which is a DOT4 Spec. I have NOT run the 3,1 yet but have run the 1.7 several times both CW and CCW. Being a NEWBIE I am at BEST a BLUE level intermediate driver but the best time so far was 1.22. At Eagles Canyon raceway I did some 2.15's in the rain on my MS 4S tires. I am shortly going to go to a SQUARE 315 30 18 set up with HOSSIER tires on 18 x 11 APEX EC7 wheels ET25. Currently I have run nothing but my street setup 300TW MS 4S and have been pleased with both the wear and performance especially for a 300 TW tire. (15K miles and maybe 15 track days).

AMP will be doing some more performance mods to push the engine into the 580-600 RWP area which NA at 3700 pounds should be pretty spirited. Currently I am right at 450 RWHP which is enough for me to do around 135MPH on the back straight at Eagles Canyon.

I assume you are doing a DRIVER's EDGE two day event in MAY??? HAVE FUN!!!

I'd recommend bringing a backup set of other pads for track use to be on the safe side if you drive hard. While the HPS 5.0 may feel grippier on the street, I'd expect them to fade quite quickly and be worse than stock pads once they get up to track temps if you're pushing the car at its limits.

doesnt sound like much of a track setup to me i used to have stock pads and michelin ps4s and when i upgraded to me bbk and goodyear supercar 3s i felt alot better on track and faster

michelin ps4s is not a track tire and hps 5.0 pads is more of a street pad then a track pad so be carefull

but the new brake fluid should help add some stainless lines also if you want to i have them and they feel great

HMMM, well I realize that a 4S in not s dedicated track tire, but this car handles extremely well with this setup as is. Since I also use this car as a daily driver I cant and wont set this car up for just track use. The HAWK PADS have got to be better than the GM spec pads as far as track use goes I would think. The SuperCar 3S tires since they are 220TW are certainly better for track use but they are marginal in the rain when compared to a 4S. They are probably only 2 seconds faster than the 4S on the track but are certainly NOT the street tire the 4S is but nothing is.

im still on oem brembo pads but i have a 6 piston bbk now but will be switching out to hawk dtc60 next month and yea when i switched the tires to oem goodyear supercar 3s i dropped 3 seconds on my first track day and at next one different track dropped almost 5 seconds seat time and better tires really helps!

i used to daily my car then it turned into weekend fun car now its almost just track only car and you can always get two sets of wheels if you want to!

The HPS pads from Hawk won't be. OE pads, especially in ZL1 front sizes, will absolutely outperform HPS pads on the track. You'll want one of the DTC pads for track use, those are Hawk's line of track pads.

While after the track day today, I agree with your assessment. The HAWK STREET 5.0 pads did seem to have a little more initial bite, however I found that the hawk pads had a small amount of fad after warming up that I didnt experience with the stock OEM brembo pads.

If I switch out to DTC pads but wanted to also use that pad on the street what compound would work best in your opinion???

That's where things get tricky. IMO the best bad for street and track use would be OE or maybe even the DTC 30. I've not heard much on the 30's before, but they seem better suited for mixed use than the DTC 60/70/80 or other brand's full race pad based on their description. I'm not sure if they'd give much more initial bite over stock like you're looking for, though.

The other option would be to get one of the DTC 60/70/80 pads for track use only and swap back to the HPS pads for the street. I hate to regurgitate since it seems like all brake hardware threads turn into this recommendation, but reaching out to KNS Brakes would probably be helpful. They have a good selection of pads and can also make a better recommendation on which specific pads to get based on your ZL1 front calipers to maintain the proper front/rear balance.

Appreciate the feedback. This may very well be a case where my over thinking got me to assuming there was a better pad then the OEM one for mixed use. I NEVER really had any issues with the STOCK OEM pad and they lasted for 12 track days for god's sake (LOL). I never experienced any brake fad with them but I made the assumption an AFTER MARKET pad just had to be better right??? Anyway this weekend at the track I asked a couple of the Instructors and Advanced level ZL1 guys what they were running for brake pads and they all said OEM so I guess if it aint broke, it dont need fixin!!! LOL
