Anyone add leather to upper door panel on 1SS?
I'm going to replace the knee pads in my SS, and I was thinking of replacing both door panels with a couple from a 2SS, seeing as though the plastic pad on the upper portion is plastic-welded on and isn't a simple detachment like the others.
But I was thinking...maybe I can simply get some sort of leather overlay and place it on there with strong adhesive instead. Has anyone ever tried this? Would this even be possible, or sensible? Also, inb4 anyone says, "you should've just gotten a 2SS." I am very aware of the model I purchased. I just simply want to know if this is actually a thing. |

Unless the leather is wrapped underneath the panel, it's probably not going to look very good. I wrapped my door and center console knee pads, and even with them removed it was not easy to stretch them evenly to avoid pulls or creases. The covers for the upper door panels would need to be pre- formed to shape to get the edges to look good, and even then it might be hard to hide the edges of the material.

https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=538496 And personally, I would not attempt the upper door panel. The way the transition between the plastic part and the door panel is done, it is unlikely that you will have an invisible seam. Chances are you will have some pull back and the edge of your leather piece will show. Plus, since you can't pull it from behind, the edge will look crap, it won't be straight, it might be very wavy. Unless you do the plastic weld removal, I would not suggest you to try it. If you are a professional upholstery guy who has done several years of vinyl or leather wrap, maybe you can give it a try!

There are a bunch of 2SS door cards on Ebay. Of course, you will have memory switches not connected to anything, but you would have the factory upper leather.

So I guess if I get the door panels, I'll already have the door knee pads. I would just need to get the console pads. I am assuming, though, that the wiring harness won't be plug-and-play? |
