NAV Update

I had my SS in the shop a few weeks ago and the map version was changed. I assumed I had the newest maps. I was wrong. I was cruising around and the onboard nav had me in the middle of nowhere when I was on a 2,3 year old bridge and highway.
I went to purchase the update USB stick from GM but good lord! $175!?!? That's shipping and tax included. That seems unreasonably high for just an update.
Do they ever have these updates on sale or offer discount codes? They have a place to enter a discount code but I couldn't find one, everything I clicked just brought you back to the regular GM site. Worthless!

I got the 2019 map update for $99.99 last September, they were running a limited promotion back then, so it is possible to get it a bit cheaper.

This probably should be a free update at least during the bumper to bumper period, but IIRC map provisioning is outsourced to a 3rd party and they want their cut no matter what.

That's not too bad. A hell of a lot better than $175. I'd update it for that much. Maybe I'll get a coupon or email next month.

Use Google maps, or Waze on carplay or Android auto and enjoy free updates and a much better navigation.

Got the update a few months ago but haven't installed it yet. Instructions indicate car should be running for the entire time the update is being installed. Anyone install it without letting the car run?

What this man stated.

I have the navigation, but it doesn't come close to Google maps.

A prime example is I was looking for a hotel near Myrtle Beach. Spent an easy 35 min trying to program the address in the system... "Couldn't find the exact address" and kept offering suggestions far from where I wanted to go.

Tried address, Tried local attractions, hotel name, etc...etc...

Pulled up google maps, done in 30 seconds and on my way.

I tracked the route with the car navigation and when I was at my destination...somehow the "maps" knew the address, knew the location, knew the name...

All the search criteria I entered before the trip didn't work to find this place, but once I was in the parking lot...poof like magic.

What good is navigation that can only display your destination after you arrive?

I use both WAZE and the OEm navigation

Waze takes into account traffic and gives great back road alternatives, sometimes

OEM can be projected onto the HUD, which I like to use sometimes.

Always good to have options

Also, I get it, all of our budgets are not the same... but complaining about a $175 map update is a bit much... especially considering we all spend hundreds of dollars on "junk" every month

Maybe it's the child in me (I'm 71 years old) but I rather prefer the OE Nav. because of all the bells and whistles that go with it. I also own an expensive Garmin navigation system which although I admit is far and away better than Mylink, I still prefer Mylink because of the way it's integrated into the car's systems. My $350 Garmin system is tucked away neatly in one of my office drawers at home probably never to be used again.

Except, when you buy a Garmin GPS for $175.00, it comes with lifetime map updates. I own several Garmin GPS units and they all have free lifetime map updates. Charging anything more than a nominal fee for updating our Camaros is a rip off.

I did it like grampa_ss using a battery tender with the ignition on (press start button for five seconds without pressing pedals). Took close to an hour I believe.

Agreed, but this only works as long as you're within range of a cell tower for your provider. The advantage of GPS (OEM NAV, Garmin, etc.) over Google is that it normally works anywhere. There are a lot of areas in the midwest and west that still don't have cellular data coverage with all the major providers. My company phone and my wife's phone are with different providers and it is surprising how often only one of us have data access outside of large cities.

+1

Went to the Canadian Rockies back in June (sadly without The Mistress) but was able to download google maps of the region in advance for offline use. Worked perfectly.
