Would change before you leave. I just changed mine at 500 miles and I am taking it on a long road trip this week (1600 miles worth of trip).

I changed at 1200 miles, overfilled one quart, drove gently for 50 miles and did another oil and filter. The second drain still had lines of metallic silver color in the oil. Now as needed by time or mileage. IMHO

My question is, what's the worst that can happen if you wait until 3k-5k before doing your first change?

That's what I plan on doing. The oil was discolered, but I didn't see any metal particles floating. I will cut open the filter later and report my findings on the internals later. |

Those that change before that are just wasting their money. 3,000 miles on oem Mobil 1 in my 2009 CTS and I don't change until the OLM or 1 year. Quote:

Would I run the first batch of oil for the remainder of the oil life monitoring system on zero mileage new car? Absolutely not! Was there metal in my drained oil before I pulled the filter? Yep..Harmless? perhaps. The filter? Loaded with metal and some were quite large. Do as you will, but for an additional $6 for a Mobil 1 or K&N filter (over a cheaper/inferior filter) and an additional $32 for oil, I'll change mine now thank you. If you do the searching, Mobil1 synthetic and Pennzoil Platinum synthetic were on sale for $3.99 quart. I bought 8 cases..enough for a few seasons. So an oil change for me costs $43 and not the $80-90 other people are commenting about. About the 8 quarts of absolutely fine oil I changed at 800 miles? Maybe I am not being "green" but I am looking out for a $40k car. JMHO

No need to worry about going green since we already drive hybrid cars. I don't know about you, but my Camaro burns gasoline AND rubber
