Insurance or Out of Pocket?

Real quick, come out the grocery store only to see someone hit the back of my car. It's minimal damage but enough to where I know I'm going to need a new rear bumper. I have a 2017 white Camaro SS. Does anyone know around what I'm looking at to replace? I was just going to go through a Chevy dealer but would consider going to an outside shop if the price is too much. I think I have a $200 or $500 deductible so that's why i was considering insurance but again, just dont know my options. Thanks.

That's gonna be way more than your deductible. Sorry that happened. Hit & run should be punishable by death. If you hit my car, man up and admit it.

Hit and run? People are garbage. Long shot here, but is it possible that the grocery store has cameras?

Ohh I understand its gonna be way more than the deductable. I'm guesstimating $1500-$1800. Is that about right or way more?

A deer hit the rear quarter panel of mine, and although it only made a couple of small dents and scratch no longer then 3 inches, it was 1600.00 bucks.
They were able to remove the dents and repaint the area and blend it. I was so worried it would look noticible, but good lord when I got it back I had no idea where the deer hit it.

That being said, you will def be getting a new bumper and they will have to paint it so I wouldn't surprised if it's closer to 3 grand. In my area at least it is free to get an estimate, I would do that if you can.

See if your ins is going to increase... if so how much... if it is way more over the total repair cost (obviously its spread out over couple years with rate increase) then pay yourself. Otherwise let ins handle it. Also if ins takes care of it, a lot of ins co have a warrenty repair, if something goes wrong with the paint job they will fix it.

Did you file a police report? Give that number to the ins.

Maybe try to find a white bumper at salvage. I had a wall cabinet fall off the wall and take out my side mirror of my then 3 year old Corvette which was Torch Red and I found a torch Red mirror with memory for $125 which was way less than new which would also require paint.

Not always true. Your insurance may not raise the rate for that one time but if you change companies or have another claim it will go up more. Filing under insurance shows a paid claim on any network.

Also you have to consider if you claim it, it will show up on the carfax. If you pay out of pocket to an independent shop then most likely will not.

If you are ever going to sell or trade this car, one of the questions is "have you ever filed an insurance claim on this vehicle?"

When you say yes, the value goes way down on the used car value estimators.

You can do this repair yourself if you want to.

Rear bumper cover on thatgmpartsguy.com is $469. Painting is going to be $500.

EDIT: Just saw that you filed the claim. This may help someone else.

If you do go through insurance, be sure to ask about diminished value. Your car will have an accident reported on the title, making it much harder to sell.
