Viper to ZL1?
Hey everyone, I just sold my 2015 Viper and I'm strongly leaning towards a ZL1 at some point next year. I only drove the Viper 4,600 miles in 3 years and I'm looking at the A10 so that my wife will want to drive it and we can use the car more. The only time I could really enjoy the car was on the track, but that was only 1 - 2 times a year. It was fun having such a rare car but I'm looking forward to getting something more practical that we can drive everyday and still take to the track.
Are there any previous Viper owners on here? Any regrets going with the A10 for those coming from a manual? Here's a pic of the old car! Here's the Z! Last edited by esm; 11-18-2018 at 05:06 PM. |

Yes, you're not alone. I went from a race yellow dual black stripes 2014 Viper GTS to an '18 ZL1A10. I like everything about this ZL1 better. It is so much more usable on daily basis I can leave it parked places where I would be reluctant to do so with the Viper the A10 transnational is brilliant. You will not regret it and of course the price point is excellent. Performance and handling of the Z L1 is also outstanding.

Me too! Had a 2013 and sold it because I needed the back seat. Newest member of the family is a gearhead like his dad!
I also purchased the A10 and thus far I do not miss the manual. I am also impressed how the mag shocks help disguise the cars weight when cornering! |

Its like apples to Oranges, ZL1 is more refined with a backseat less of a head turner. Like Stealth7 mentioned you can park and worry less even though it still gets people that stare at it in parking lots and touch it. Also ZL1 is a fantastic choice because you can spend a few bucks on mods and have your son in back seat while spanking vipers 0-80 lol.

Not sure where my posting went but, I sold my 15' ViperGT in December 2017 and moved into the Zl1-1LE, also because I do 4+ HPDEs a year at the moment. The Viper though temps were MUCH lower than the 1LE on track during a 90deg day here... Consumables are of a better selection on the 1LE, Recaros nicer than the Sabelts. (Now, if the Viper had rev-match I might still have it). The temps seen in the 1LE do get up there (OIL) but not like the Z06....They do stay somewhat safe. I suspect the A10 would not survive full sessions on a hot day, all day... Just nature of the beast cooling with cooling yet another radiator.

Uh...Nope.... Just that FCA were boneheads charging 20K over reality, sat on them for a loooong time, so sales basically tanked. The only units that are worth anything are the early gen GTS models homologated for racing...(white w/blue stripe ones). The Gen5 is lightyears better built than previous gens, but, they are not a unicorn car.

Actually vipers are quite rare with production in the hundreds for most years. In addition resell price, at least in my case, was excellent! The only thing I miss from the Viper is really the stereo. The stereo in the ZL1 blows. I do wish the Z L1 had more OEM headroom in terms of fueling and supercharger capacity.

To answer one of the OP's questions, no regrets going with the Auto. I was a manual only guy until I bought my Z06 and ZL1 (Both in the same month). I occasionally miss rowing my own gears, especially the freedom you have to rev, hold gears, downshift when you want. But the manual mode is so good on the A10 it can get rid of most of that. I truly think few manual-only guys would be let down by the A10. Very few.
Vipers aren't rare around me at all. It's nothing to see 3-5 at every Cars and Coffee with a couple ACRs a month. Granted, I'm in Dodge/GM/Ford territory so there's more Big 3 products here than anywhere else in the world. I've driven a GTS and honestly wasn't impressed at all. Uncomfortable, interior felt like a toy, didn't sound good, pedals were tight. The power was there but despite the V10 torque, still doesn't hit as hard as the LT4, no question. Look at a Z06 before you move on a ZL1. There's deals to be had. Don't buy into the magazines BS that the Z06 is somehow unmanageable and the ZL1 is miraculously perfect. Drive both and see what you like. Also, if you want a more raw experience, more similar to a Viper, look at a C6 ZR1. They're still VERY competitive machines on the street and track, they come with a lot of expensive options like Carbon brakes, carbon body panels, a super stout and special LS9 engine, and lots more. |

I traded my Z06 on a ZL1 and have zero regrets. It is a much more comfortable car with super performance. I tell folks it is 90% of the Vet for 60% of the price...because it is.

This is what I was thinking EXACTLY! I'm done with 2-seat cars for now, I'd rather have more room and be comfortable. My father has a 2018 C7 Grand Sport Auto. It's very nice but it's close to the same size as the Viper on the inside.
