Changing oil is one of the cheapest things you can do to prolong your engine life, especially with a high performance engine like the LT4.
I changed mine at 500 miles, and added the dimple magnetic drain plug. The oil looked new, but good piece of mind.
Changed it again at 1500 miles, a bit dirty this time.
Will change again at 3000 miles.
This hot rod will be in my family a long time, so overkill is fine with me.
Added mid America motor sports donut magnet to the oil filter too.

Changed the rear diff fluid at 1500 miles, grey and nasty with quite a bit of fine metal sludge on the magnetic plugs, will change it again at 3000 miles.

Love this forum, and the info that’s shared.
I wouldn’t have found out about the performance break in procedures with out you guys. And a good excuse to go,out and wrench on the car a bit

Let's get started with Oil. The OEM used fluid on the ZL1 is Mobil 1 5w30. You can use that oil if you're just driving on the street/drag strip. If you're tracking, you'd want to request 15w50.

As I'm sure most of you know by now, Mobil 1 brought out a new oil with GM for the new LT5 (ZR1) and LTA (CT6 V-Sport) and is now the standard fill for dealers on LT1 and LT4 engines as well. It's called Mobil 1 ESP 0w40 Dexos 2. Yes, long name. This is NOT the same oil as the current 0w40 Extended Performance or 0w40 European. This is brand new and is for the LT1, LT4, LT5, and LTA engines. For the LT4, it can be used for both street AND track use. I would highly recommend using this oil for ZL1s, ZL1 1LEs, Z06s, CTS-V3s, and LT1 based cars. In my case, I think the car idles and revs a little smoother, call me crazy but I'm not the only one reporting this. And the big benefit is of course it can handle both street and track use so no need for an oil change before a track day. This oil is ONLY available at Dealers at this time, it will be available to the public at the end of this year.

As for the differential fluid, you ONLY want to use the OEM ACDelco stuff. Don't let them put in anything else. The additive in the OEM fluid is critical to the eLSD.

I HIGHLY recommend noting the names and part numbers on your phone or a piece of paper when you go to take the car to service just to make sure you double check their work. Had I not been there, my service department was going to use a generic diff fluid and OEM 5w30 oil.

To make it easier, here's what you need to know:

Part Numbers & Names:
New Oil: 19370233 - Mobil 1 Dexos 2 0-40 ESP - 1 Quart (You'll need 10) (Just for extra info, 1 Liter is GM Part # 19353135 and a 55 gallon drum is GM Part # 19370234.)
Diff Fluid: 88862624 - 10-4034 - 75W-90 ACDELCO 1 Quart (You'll need 2, mine took about 1.75-1.8 quarts)
0w40 Oil Cap: 12686472 (Not necessary, but the info on it will reflect oil in the car)
Oil Filter: ACDelco PF64

While you're there, see if there are any open TSBs or updates for the car.

Hope this helps!

Side note: I have a Borla 60606 X Pipe on mine with a Corsa Xtreme 14784BLK axle back, which I installed at about 200 miles. So I had the tech re-torque all of the clamps. Happy to report they weren't loose or leaking at all, but it's always a good idea to check. If you want to read more about my exhaust setup, here's my thread on it: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=528893

If Mobil 1 5w30 was the standard recommended oil, why would my dealership quoting me for Mobil 1 and non Mobil 1 5w30 options and saying the cheaper non Mobil 1 is a fully covered cost and the more expensive Mobil 1 is not?

By the way I will not be going with 5w30 regardless, I’ll be going with the new 0w40, but they want additional money for that as well above and beyond even the Mobil1 5w30.

Does this make sense?
Is my dealership just being cheap?

Your dealership is being your typical stealership.
Find yourself a new dealership or change your own oil. It’s very easy man, literally three bolts need to be unscrewed.........that’s it.

I wouldn’t give that dealership my business even if my life depended on it.

True but it sounds like he has a free oil change coming.

And yes they are just ripping him off with extra BS charges.

Even if the service was free, I’d still have a hard time trusting them and their work.

I’ll try some new dealerships for sure, perhaps I’ll order the 0w40 oil cap, take the car in and show it to a different tech at the GM dealership and then when they see the oil cap they should hopefully just use the 0w40 oil. After all The only reason they even looked into the differences between the oil was because I asked them to, there are only 2 other ZL1’s in the Canadian city of 300,000 ppl I live in, so no one has much experience with these cars here.
Also they wanted $25/L for the mobil1 OW40!!!

I should be hitting the 500 mile mark sometime next week. I need to get those ZL1 Addons lifting points for the pinch welds before I bring the car in.

Question regarding the ow40

If the 2019 ZL1 comes with this from the factory, do you think GM will switch to this for the 2017 and 2018 models?

I still cant get this 0w40 for my 18 in Canada. Not until it is approved by GM Canada for warranty.

Are you tracking your ZL1? If not, there's reason why the standard oil won't work just fine. Eventually, GM will probably recommend the 0w40 for 2017-2018s.
