A8 exploded

Went to the track tonight, opening night. I was maybe the 10th car in line. During the burn out the transmission completely exploded. Parts and oil everywhere. It was even on fire for a few seconds with the turbos getting bathed in trans fluid. I think the only thing holding the bellhousing to the tail is the steel oil pan. No idea why this happened, I have made a pile of changes from last year.

Since last year new converter, frenshed up trans, drop in pistons and rods, tuning.

I can tell you my burn out was a bit more aggressive than I meant it to be. The track was slick and the wheels spun much easier than I anticipated. I did bumb the limiter a little before it blew up. Also I did my burn out in drive. I am now being told that is not ideal on the a8 for some reason and to just put it in 2 manual for the burn out.

There will be some collateral damage. Turbo blankets are crispy, at lead one transmission line is kinked, I am sure there is some wiring damage. I will be pretty sad if the motor is hurt. Hell maybe the motor broke first and somehow took out the trans. I will post up whatever I find and hope to get it out of the car today.

Yep. My understanding of that right now is fresh stock clutches. Add a clutch or two in one or two of the packs and valve body mods. I am not a transmission guy. Right now upgrades to the a8 is limited.

I am not sure if anyone has that swap sorted out. Also I don’t know if the 10 speed is any stronger.

Some people overstate what happened with words like "exploded". In your case I think exploded might not be descriptive enough! That is an amazing and scary amount of damage. Good luck with the repairs and sorting out what happened.

At the power levels you are at, I'm curious if it was from case deflection or something from the inside.

That is frustrating, sorry to see that.

Level it, put a glass top on it and make it a coffee table. The center of attention and a conversation piece in your family room.
