I have the Elite X2 ultra and I drain it everytime when I do an oil change. And it fills up only about 1" of a water bottle.

Does the LT1 *really* need a catch can? I know a lot of people install them, but are they really needed?
My LS1 required a can for racing, but it seems GM tried to engineer this issue away.

I drain mine prior to any event, and there's usually just a thin layer at the bottom. I wouldn't recommend letting it get too full, as it could slosh up and get sucked into the intake anyway in that case.

It's a DI engine, so it's best to keep all oil out of the intake tract so it doesn't coke up your intake valves.

I used to think the same way, but I had an extra few dollars and decided to pick up a Mishimoto Catch Can. Drained it after my next oil change and after I dumped out what would have went right back into my intake, I am a firm believer in them now. Especially since these are DI engines.

I check it before any event and if I have done any hard driving. Ussually have something in there but nothing crazy.
I don't DD/cruise it that often. Really only to local C&C and to the track.

I have the E2-X on my ZL1 1LE and in a 2 day track day (about 4hrs of track time total) it will accumulate about 4-5 oz of fluid. For normal street driving I get just a miniscule amount for every ~500 miles.

Ideally you would have one that would show how full it is without opening it. Also have an easy drain method. Do they even make one with these features?

Mighty mouse catch cans have a sight glass window on the side of them. They also have a petcock drain on the bottom. I just cut a water bottle in half place under petcock and open it up let it drain.
