Front end protection on long drive
I'm flying into Detroit on Friday to pick up my new 2020 Camaro. The trip back home will take about 11 1/2 hours of highway driving. Does anyone have suggestions for something I could do to protect the paint during the drive, especially from bugs? At least something that would make it easier to remove all the guts when I get to the house? I'm worried they'll be baked on by the time I arrive.
I will only be able to use products sold at local auto stores or shopping centers due to the TSA's restrictions on liquids. Worst case scenario, I could find a DIY car wash bay and spray it down with just the wax coating.

There's no TSA restriction for Tracwrap, trakktape, track armor and the like. Or blue painters tape which you can buy locally but takes much longer to put on.

I'm just wondering if there's a decent product I could maybe spray on/wipe off from like Walmart or AutoZone that would provide enough protection for the clear coat until I can get it home and properly wash/wax it.

I would fix up a mini detail kit to carry with me for the trip back home. A couple of microfiber towels Spray wax like Meguiar"s Ultimate Quik Wax Bottle of detail spray Glass cleaner Squeegee Glass cleaner towels Spray the front with Quik Wax when you leave. Clean off the bugs when you stop for gas with the detail spray and glass cleaner.

In olden timey days I'd wax the front end and let it dry to a haze but not buff it off.

Since it's now Friday ...
After the trip, Turtle Wax Bug-n-Tar remover. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Turtle-Wa...-16oz/16888962 Shake well. Set to stream, hold a couple inches from the paint and squeeze the trigger VERY LIGHTLY to get just a dollop of goop on each bug. Wait at least 2-3 minutes for the solvents to do their work. Wipe off with a plush MF towel, rolling it to lift up bug bits as you go and keep them from dragging/scratching the paint. Turn the towel frequently. Works like a charm. |
