Sealed vs ported boxes
Sup guys, about to grab a pair of Sundown SA 12s and I cant find a ported box meant for a 6th Gen anywhere...(as in from a place like ********) So Im assuming most or using sealed boxes here? Or utilized prefab or custom made boxes?
Also do you think ill be ok running those subs on a Sundown 1000 or should I step up to the 1500D thanks for the input! |

Sealed vs ported boxes

You have roughly 14” of height in the 5th gen trunk unless you remove or raise the 6x9s. I’m planning to build in the trunk. Other than that you’d be better off sealed. I’m running 2 individual sealed boxes until I get around to building my ported enclosure. Another option would be to drop to 10” subs. Lastly, depending on the version of sa 12 they’re “rated” anywhere from 600rms-750 rms I believe so you would be fine with the 1500 watt amp but could likely go bigger. Just be sure you can provide the proper voltage. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I've had both ported and sealed box's in my Camaro. Subwoofer in a JL Audio 12w7 so it bangs. Ported was nice but to be honest sealed is where its at. All these people talking about sealed being quit are dumb. My sealed set up destroys ported on most notes. The sound quality ported lets say was a 6 out of 10, sealed is a 9 out of 10. Way better sound quality sealed and you feel the bass much more. I will from now on always do sealed set ups. Go sealed trust me. Trust the crust.

I’m looking at putting 2 JL 10w3 with 1000 watt amp in sealed box but concerned about weight. What do you guys think?

Why are you worried about weight? If you are going for a particular sound or set up you must make sure everything is constructed as best as it can be. This sometimes means more weight but in the end the sound quality can be much better. Just depends what you are trying to accomplish.

Ported boxes can have good sound quality they just have to be designed properly. Sundown SAs are designed for a ported box but I've has a sa-12 in a sealed box and it sounded good. But really came alive when I put it in a ported box. And they would be fine on the 1500 just make sure the gains are set properly.

Free air, ported, sealed boxes can all sound good, with the right design, in the right acoustical environment, using the right subwoofer. Same sub, places into each of the three types of boxes, even built to spec will sound different. Amplifier choice will also affect the overall sound. There’s no right or wrong, just different based on what you want

Hi all, well I finished my dual 12 Subs, I used 2-JL Audio 12TW3-D4 12" and I must say WOW! I am in a 2017 2LT and made a custom sealed box, making as large as possible and have almost 1.78 CF and that's perfect for the 12TW3-D4 wired for 1 ohm using a Rockford Fosgate Prime 1200 watt and set the gain not to be more than 1% distortion so I don't damage these 800 watt subs. When the top is up I get some pounding bass and when the top is down not as much but with some MP4 music I am very impressed and I think for a Camaro hard to beat and still have the trunk space useable.
