California will phase out the sale of all gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035 in a bid to lead the U.S. in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging the state's drivers to switch to electric cars.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order Wednesday that amounts to the most aggressive clean-car policy in the United States. Although it bans the sale of new gas cars and trucks after the 15-year deadline, it will still allow such vehicles to be owned and sold on the used-car market.

"This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change," the governor said in a statement.

"Our cars shouldn't make wildfires worse — and create more days filled with smoky air. Cars shouldn't melt glaciers or raise sea levels threatening our cherished beaches and coastlines."

Newsom, a Democrat, also threw his support behind a ban on petroleum fracking but called on the California Legislature to make that change

I think you will find by 2035 50% of all vehicles on the road will be electric. I think Audi has already committed to be all electric. GM, Ford, Chrysler, and all the major brands are investing billions in electric. I really wonder if CA realizes they have to use NG to power the electrical grid to keep all these cars running. Right now they have rolling blackouts due to strict regs in power plants.

Not to mention natural disasters that would require the flexibility of an ICE or hybrid vehicle.

Jeez. I am sure glad I was able to live in the era of piston and gasoline powered engines. Working on lawn mower, minibike and Go Kart engines is how my passion for vehicles started when I was a kid. I never liked the electric lawn mowers even back then, LOL.

I have no enthusiasm for electric cars. Boring......

When I am forced too, I'll get the cheapest one I can- whatever it is. I won't work on it, I'll treat it like an appliance. Use it and throw it away. I hope there will be gasoline around so I'll be able to take my classic V8 out once in a while.

You realize this is an executive order and not a law. Huge difference. And in 2035 they will be saying Gavin who? All a smoke screen.

Most of the countries power grid can't handle everyone plugging cars in right now and probably still won't by 2035. I keep hearing of all the random black outs still during the summer right now from friends and family in different states or on the news.

the rolling blackouts in california aren't due to the electrical usage being too high for production.

It's due to forest fire prevention because the high voltage cables can arc to dry brush and cause fires when under normal load. Because there's a lot of mountains in california and a lot of power lines going from one side of them to the other and electrical companies tend to be too lax in maintaining the vast amounts of land surrounding those cables because they're hard to access.

I am aware of this and California was not one of the states I had in mind when I mentioned it. I also forgot that across the US many apartment complexes like the one I live at do not have charging stations and only parking spaces unless you get a garage like mine where I house my Camaro but its only a standard 3 prong socket. Not sure how much it costs to install them though for each parking space.

Workplace (commercial) charging will likely outstrip home charging for some time since it's easier to install chargers at commercial locations than residential. And for employees, you dont need super expensive ultra fast chargers, since you have roughly 8 hours to charge the vehicles and 8 hours is plenty of time to go vastly beyond most commute usage.

But apartments would probably follow fairly quickly once it becomes a need. They dont need 30amp+ amp charging.... low amp chargers would be fine since most vehicles will sit in their parking spots / garages for an entire night without being used. I'm sure adoption will vary based on cost/profit

I dont think it's implausible for new car sales to be restricted to electric only by 2035. The mandate wouldn't do anything about existing cars and used cars except slowly price them out of use during registration and inspection and insurance. So i imagine lower income people (living in places where their landlords aren't adopting electric chargers /etc) will still be able to get by with existing gas powered used cars for a long time.

Figure they have about 15-10 years worth of 2025 to 2034 model cars to use when 2035 comes around.

The people this impacts first are people who buy new cars... and if you're buying new, you're not poor.

They are also regulated as to what they can do, environmentally, to clear that land.
