Chevy App/Onstar Smart Driver

I found myself messing around with the Chevy app today on my phone. Has anyone else noticed the Onstar smart driver activity tab? It keeps a timeline of each trip and “grades” your good driving habits. I’ve known it’s possible to extract this data but I wasn’t thrilled to have it in my face.

Needless to say I didn’t get a great review of my recent trip to the grocery store. It was in Mexico of course... Ridiculous feature.

Orwell called it, Big brother is always watching.

That type of info can also be extracted from your phone.

In most states it's permissible for police to pull that type of data from your car after a crash.

Sadly, it's probably only a matter of time until info like this is sold to or hacked by the insurance companies.

In all fairness I'm pretty sure OnStar registers a hard start when you idle off the line...

Damn! I wonder if it goes lower than 10? Nice job, sir. It ought to be a bragging right from now on:
650HP
650TQ
10s qtr mile
10 Onstar activity tracker

It would be interesting to see what qualifies as hard acceleration. Looking at the street view that shows where the incidents occurred...all I can do is smile and nod my head.

Understanding Your Score

Depending on the selected timeframe or trip, you will receive a Driver Score on a scale of 10 to 100. Your score is calculated using a proprietary algorithm based on a variety of factors, including hard braking, distance driven, time of day and speed.

It’s good to remember every trip longer than a half-mile is scored and that scores by trip can vary widely. For example, a longer trip with one mild hard brake would likely score better than a very short trip with a more abrupt hard brake. Monthly scores are better measures of your driving ability since they come from the widest selection of data (number of trips).

You can compare your score anonymously to other drivers in the program when you view your Monthly Report online, including those who drive the same vehicle as you or those in your state.

Driving Tips

View details about your driving habits to get suggestions for improvement, such as:

• Anticipating stops earlier to avoid hard braking.

• Avoiding traffic to keep a consistent speed in lower traffic areas where you won’t have to accelerate or brake hard.

• Slowing down because your fuel economy can decrease rapidly at speeds above 50 mph.

I turned it off on day 1. Doubt I would have scored too well.

Pro tip for those who want to be in the 10's: it's hard braking that does the score in, hard acceleration is ignored. Bonus tip: you can also deflate the score with some quality time spent over 80 mph.

(I turned it off as soon as I realized that even though I'd opted not to get the score on day 1, it was still "activated, but not registered" or some such nonsense, I had to specifically deactivate the feature. Not that this would prevent data collection, of course.)

Does this prevent the tracking/collecting of data or just the sharing of it with the Onstar system? Better said, what exactly does pulling the fuses do and which fuses are they?
