Head designer of 2019 Camaro says...

From John Mack, the head of design for the new Camaro...

Quote:
It isn't immediately obvious, but according to Mack, there's a little bit of the original Camaro in the new front ends. "The RS and base LT model they actually have a design that kind of has a homage to the first-gen where you have the larger center-opening grille. The lower grille also, that is downplayed," he said
Quote:
You might think the design team would update the Camaro SS first, but that's not necessarily the case. "We started off by actually kind of doing what we feel is right for this trim level," said Mack. "We want to make a very impactful graphical statement, and its face has to have an emotional quality to it. When you get into the SS, you want a look that's more over the top, so that becomes a bolder expression. The graphics are going to be, I think, more unique. Something that could be a touch polarized. But again, keep that sinister face to the vehicle that wants to evoke an emotion. You see that in your rearview mirror, you're like "holy cow what's that I need to get out of its way.

So the base model was the original idea and the SS a after thought.

Seems accurate.

But why do the SS just uses 90% of the T5 bumblebee frontend? I thought this was a custom build by GM for Michael Bay, but somehow they decided this is good enough to be the new SS? Even the press thought the Bumblebee looked worse than a normal 6th gen - like here or here

The Turbo and V6 refresh looks fine, I don't get why the SS is looking totally different and worse

They need to get rid of the flow tie. Besides that it's not bad looking at all.

I agree that front fascia is brutal. If I saw that in my rear view mirror I would step on the gas and get away from that image. Why are we trying to copy the original anyways. Each Gen should be unique on its own. They hit it out of the ballpark with the Gen 6 in many different ways. Stick with whats popular. Love my 2017.

I gotta believe that the idea for using the flowtie in the crossbar came very early. Someone fell in love with that idea and they engineered around that. If more airflow was the primary goal they could have taken a fraction of an inch off the top or bottom edge of the crossbar and achieved the same and still used a solid bowtie or a flowtie in the upper grille. A solid bowtie in the crossbar existed as far back as the TF5 Bumblebee concept. They had time to go the right direction and chose not to.

Yeah, in the same sense that I'd keep my distance from any car that looks like its front bumper was obliterated...
