Mine is still fully functional (including diagnostics and remote control via the app) since 2018, because it came with a 5-year basic onstar subscription. Hopefully this was still the case in 2020 and you got your 5 years.

Mine is basically useless since my 30 day OnStar trial ended.

Mine worked (even after the my free onstar trial expired) until I discovered the recent thread about Chevy/Onstar providing your driving history (hard acceleration, hard braking, high speed) to insurance companies without explicitly telling you that when you sign up. I called Onstar and told them I refuse to let them provide the info to 3rd parties, and they said they made the change to my account. Also told me per my request that I'd still be able to get ODB error codes sent to my phone and email.

Since these changes, the driving monitor app no longer works. We'll see if I continue to receive error code notifications.

I believe 2020 was the year they discontinued the 5-year option for a few free features. It used to be that you activated it, used it exactly one time to unlock (or lock) the car (or start it), and those features would remain active for five years whether you had a plan or not. I did this with my truck and worked right up to the end of the five year mark from when I bought it.

My car (a 2020) had 30 days and done. I have no use for their services and will never pay for them (which is also why I will not purchase a new GM at this point since it is now a required item).

Not worth the time. The only nice thing it does, is tell you if the car started when starting it off the app vs key fob. It also works a lot farther away from the car vs using the fob. After 3 years you loose the key fob features. After the free trail it just tells you when to service the vehicle and tracks you

You can push the monthly cost down if you call them and let them know you're not that interested in the service. I think I'm at 8 bucks a month for the supposedly 15 dollar a month service. I travel sometimes, and like to be able to fire up the car while it sits at the airport to make sure the battery is good, or to know that the car didn't wander off somewhere.

As others said most of the mobile app is useless without an active Onstar subscription/trial. You can do things within the app search accessory parts, see your Chevrolet rewards points, and maybe schedule service?

I would suggest signing up here....Then you can find out what your particular vehicle does and doesn't have relating to On-Star. It's a mixed bag depending on your model year. I found this site helpful for my '17 Impala. Look at the On-star links to see what's available and the details for each item like the MobileApp. Good luck. Hope this helps.

This is an interesting tidbit here.

You mean to tell me that all those months I scored a zero because of track days or spirited driving isn't helping my insurance? You mean those 400 hard accelerations and 300 hard brakes and 100% time spent over 80 mph last month doesn't say I'm a safe driver? Lol. Full coverage on my 18 is around $650 for 6 months. Are you telling me it could be less than that if they didn't have this info?

I'm curious to read more, do you have a link you can enlighten me with?

Edit. 6 months later I switched to Hagerty. My rates are now $750 for 12 months.

The information gets collected and then is "sold" to third parties without your consent (like LexisNexis). An insurance carrier -might- request that data about you from LexisNexis and would use it to jack your rates through the roof.

You can request a report from LN on their web site (takes a few days because they snail-mail you a code to use to ensure it's really you asking for it). Then lock your report down so they don't share it with anyone.

LN is an info clearing house that gets used by a number of different entities like a sort of credit bureau although they are not actually a bureau. And the level of information detail they have on you is alarming to say the least.

It's also basically impossible to get incorrect information removed from a report because they don't actually have a way for you to submit all of the supporting documentation that's required.

Any of the features, including the OnStar Smart Driver program, I avoid like the plague because they share and report your data to StateFarm (which can impact premiums for some people) and to third party reporting agencies.

Large thread on that info here: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=610488

So, free or not, simply know that any app features that involve reporting between the car and the app will include OnStar--and if that equipment isn't disabled by calling OnStar (read the thread for that info) that your data is probably being shared and possibly sold.
