Tesla Auto Pilot Fiasco

Hands free and autonomous are unnecessary and dangerous.

Hopefully a stop will be put to all this techy-nonsense.

The cost of insurance for liability should be astronomical. All the lazy-bones self-centered selfish "drivers" who crave this gimmick should pay through the nose for the privilege of putting everyone else's lives at risk.

Just because "everyone is doing it" makes the situation worse. The competition, cost cutting, etc. to create sales makes it all the more dangerous.

And their learning curve will be at the expense of innocent lives. This "technolgy" will never be perfected or fool-proof.

Autonomous driving technology will just make people worse drivers as the years go on. Why even pay attention anymore if you have lane departure warnings, brake warnings, lane controls, etc? Driving is evolving into a lost art and skill, unfortunately.
People are always on their phones now when they drive. Honestly, I'd trust these technologies more than alot of the distracted idiots on the road today..

The real issue here is that “AutoPilot” isn’t. It is simply an advanced adaptive cruise control with lane-changing capability. Period, end of story. The name allows people to think that it is more than what it is. By contrast, GM’s system is significantly more effective since it monitors driver attention, uses Lidar (Tesla doesn’t and actively downplays the technology) and maintains a strict “library” of roads where it can operate, requiring driver responsibility on the roads where it can’t. It’s far more advanced in ability to allow the car to establish control. It’s closer to being an “auto-pilot” system Tesla’s system. But GM calls it “SuperCruise”. Arguably, the two companies should switch technology names.

The thing is, for personal vehicle ownership, autonomous driving technology will be optional, just like a sunroof is optional. Don’t want it? Don’t buy it. The good thing about that is the only people who will pay the optional price for it are the people we should all hope would use it because the car would drive better than they would. The first and most common uses of autonomous will be to replace the single highest cost component for Uber and Lyft…the driver. So, yes, Johnny Cab will be a reality, but beyond that, private owners will still have every right and ability to drive their own cars.

i passed a guy one morning this week who was slumped over on the drivers window, clearly sleeping, while his autopiloted tesla drove down the interstate @ 60 mph. it was ~4 am and still dark, the auto bright/dim lights were flashing as they kicked on and off in conjunction with oncoming interstate traffic.

dumb. i was in a 75,000 lb vehicle, i wasn't concerned for my safety.

Perhaps this will be a crack that opens wider and extends the definition of "vulnerable road users" to include such concepts as relative vehicle size and intentionally risky behavior on the part of those "driving" in some mode with "autopilot" claims.
