ZL1 1LE Front Brake Rotor Turn vs. Replace

I need to address my warped front brake rotors before this season starts, I am hoping to have more air flow to the front brakes with the addition of the SS 1LE larger track brake ducts that I installed at the end of last season (after my rotors were already warped).

How many guys have turned or machined their front rotors and had good results. My only worry is the reduced rotor thickness causing it to warp again, or just replaced them with OEM rotors or aftermarket?

Ideally I would just put new rotor rings on the factory hats and call it a day but that doesn't look to be a option.
Thanks.

Actually warped and not pad deposits? Highly doubt they're actually warped. If they're still over min thickness then yeah you can turn them and they'll be fine.

Pretty sure they just have uneven pad transfer as samr350 said. Do they look like there is uneven deposits? Blotchy, inconsistent color?

I’ve used this on various rotors and it works. You’ll have to remove the rotors. It’s worth the try, if it is uneven transfer layer then this will get you back down to a fresh rotor surface. But you’ll have to solve the overheating that is causing the poor transfer.

Do you mean base SS track deflectors?

I agree, the SS (non 1LE) deflectors are bigger than the SS 1LE deflectors.

buy my used set of Hawk dtc70, install and run for a few days on the street and your rotors will be squeaky clean. Reinstall your OEM pad and bed them in. Problemo solved.

I have this big tupperware that drags on the ground during braking now.

I guess I was under the impression that pad deposit vibration would only start to show itself once the rotors were warm or hot vs. a normal warped rotor would vibrate right off the bat cold?

Did you order the medium coarse or fine grit compound?

in my experience, once you have pad deposits, it doesn't matter if they are hot or cold. End a track day with deposits and vibration, let the car sit and completely cool down, then drive off - the vibration will still exist. You have to get the deposit off the rotors. If you are using OEM, it will be very difficult to do that without some intervention. Either take off the rotors and clean them by hand, or put on a more aggressive pad and let them slowly scrape off the deposit. A track pad is very aggressive when cold and will clean the rotor quickly. And no scrubbing or removing the rotor.

This is my process
1. Start with clean rotors and use OEM pads for street use.
2. Day or so before a track event I put in track pads. A couple days worth of street driving will clean off all the OEM pad material
3. Bed track pads.
4. Tear it up at the track
5. Keep track pads on for a couple days after an event. When they are cold, they will self clean the rotor of any deposits
6. Swap back to OEM. Bed if you want to. I don't
7. Next track event - repeat.

If you are committed to using OEM pads for both street and track I see two options

1. clean rotors by hand after every event
2. Insert an aggressive pad, drive a couple days, return to OEM.

Think of the aggressive set of pads as a tool. Couple hundred bucks and it will last you a lifetime. And in a pinch, you could use them for a track day. Or a back-up set of pads if your OEM are shot.

Haha, yeah those deflectors are huge. Those are the non-1LE SS deflectors.

I use the course grit hone.

I wonder if this depends on the severity of the unevenness. Do your rotors have the blotchy spots on them?

Here's a good read on transfer layer:
