thread formatting doesn't work

Maybe I've got a setting wrong or something, but I'm having a terrible problem formatting my posts as I would like. None of the formatting buttons at the top of the text window work, I can't use any smilies or anything... It doesn't even accept line breaks! This is really annoying. Does anyone know what the trouble is? I
