As far as naming goes, I see it as a bold move and we'll see how it pays off. They needed something to grab attention, headlines, and it needed to carry some weight with it if they want to take on Tesla, and this does exactly that. If they called it the new Edge, or whatever, it wouldn't get near the attention. I don't see many people not buying a Mustang because this is also called a Mustang. If it fails it will just go down as that weird thing they did 20 years ago. The Mustang survived the Mustang II afterall.
Interesting that you mentioned Edge. There are reports circulating that Ford may be cancelling next gen Edge. Some point to the extended version of the soon-to-launch Bronco. Some point to a potential 5-passenger version of Explorer, and some point to a strategy to exit vehicle assembly in Canada. The interior dimensions of Mach E appear to be fairly close to Edge. Might as well toss that into the "because..." pile.

I hate to say it but it makes sense to cancel the Edge IMO and I hate saying that because we had one and it was a fantastic vehicle. But the Escape has gotten bigger, and the Edge is so close in price to the Explorer now and when the Bronco and Bronco sport show up that is going to be a very crowded showroom of 5 passenger SUVs and CUVs

"As Ford continues testing ahead of the start of production, it’s figuring out that it can get a little more out of the electric SUV.

Earlier this year, the automaker reported that the Mustang Mach-E electric car charges 30% faster than they previously thought."
